Chapter 72
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
Christian
âSo then itâs settled, weâll deal with Fabio one week from now,â Christian confirmed and looked at everyotable.
There had been a delay in the plansâbut in the end, all the families agreed that Fabio Garcia was a dangput down.
âHow can we sit here and plan our attack, when the father of the enemy is right among us.â One of the mpointed his finger at Aldo Sala as the others agreed. All Christian could think of was Enzo, and how he wotreated if anyone were to find out the truth. He looked at Enzo who sat on the other side of the table witembarrassed look on his face. As he should, Christian thought.
The voices around the table were starting to get more active and he was unsure of what to do. He lookedgrandfather to his father, waiting for their helpâbut they both leaned back. Thatâs right, from now on IâmChristian thought.
âThe pain Aldo has to carry for his daughter being a snake is enough of a punishmentâbut at the momethe same enemy, so we have to rely on each other.â Gio jumped in as everyone went quiet.
âThank you,â Christian mutteredâonce again his brother was the one to save him.
âThere is one more thing I would like to discuss,â Christian announced. It was something he had promisewas going to keep that promise. In a way, he saw it as a way to pay for his sins. Perhaps she would forgivmy promise, he thought.
âVincenzo and Luis Garciaâand all of his men who decide to surrenderâ¦we let them go,â Christian said. everyone around the table lost their patience and whispered among each other.
âChristian, you canât do that!â Emilio raised his voice and glared at him. âWill you be able to take the conthey suddenly decide to take revenge? Thatâs not for you to decide.â
âHe can, he has the final word.â Johnny stood behind him. He wouldâve done it either way, but he was noEmilio Alfonzo and wouldâve done anything to get in his way.
âThanks for your input, but this concerns my sister and my nieceâs lives and Serena is an Alfonzo,â
Emiliowho leaned back unimpressed.
âSerena will be a Lamberti, and the baby is also a LambertiâChristian is a Lamberti, so guess what? He hJohnny shrugged his shouldersâwhile a startled Emilio did not know what to do.
âThanks, Johnny.â Christian smiled. Also, he knew that letting them go would be extremely risky, but he dbright eleven-year-old as a threat. Vincenzo on the other hand, he was aware that he might end up resenSerena and the babyâbut Christian did not want to hurt him.
âLucio, are you not going to say anything?â One of the men spoke. Christian turned back to look at his ilbeen watching the discussion in silence. He cleared his throat, to gain everyoneâs attention.
âChristian haHe spoke and got up from his chair.
âAnd after we have dealt with Fabio I will officially retireâI will leave everything in Christianâs hands.â Hedropped a bomb, making everyone gasp. Even Christian had not expected for him to share the news at tbut even though his dad was still standing, he knew that time was ticking and that anything could happeâSuddenly?â Matteo who was also unaware of everything spoke in a suspicious tone. It was no doubt thasomething was going on. Not even a year ago Lucio had told Matteo that he wanted to grand Christian has long as he could.
âYes, suddenly.â Lucio sighed. âI trust my son with my heart, so I will expect all of you to do the sameâediscussion.â
Even though many did not agree, no one had the guts to speak against Lucio and held themselves back through the plans one more time.
âYou did great little brother.â Gio patted him on the back after everyone had left, everyone but Lucio.
âThmumbled and patiently waited until Gio had left the room.
âSo now itâs official, thatâs what you wanted right?â Lucio spoke. âDadâ¦â Christian lowered his head in emâI know you thought that I would change my mind and give everything to Gio, but you need to understaafter your positionâyour brother wants to be there for you.â Lucio tried his hardest to reassure him.
Christian raised his head and looked at Lucioâunsure of what to say. For him, it was hard to believe that being nice, but he did not want to trouble his father, so he just went along with it.
âYou did great and Iâm really proud of you.â Lucio held him by his shoulder and smiled at him. âYou haverelaxed, more polite to elders, youâre slowly becoming yourself again, an upgraded versionâI like this sidchuckled.
âThe only bad thing is that you had to cheat on Serena, for you to get your head together,â Lucio commewant to talk about it,â Christian said and stepped back.
Betraying Serena had still wounded him, and all he wanted was to get it off his chest and tell her the truthe kept it hiddenâthe more he began to realize that what she did not know could not hurt her.
âYou will eventually tell her after all of this is overâ¦right?â Lucio asked while Christian nodded his head. Hhis terminally ill father did not need to know that. He felt bad for thinking that way, but he had changed coming clean. The bond with Serena was tighter than it had ever beenâand he wasnât planning on breagirl he would never see again.
âIâve been thinking, you need someone around youâsomeone to advise you. Marc has been busy with thim, I donât know for how much longer Iâll be around, youâre clearly not that fond of your brothers or anthan JohnnyâIâve decided that you need a personal assistant.â Lucio spoke.
âA what?â Christian laughed in disbelief, ignoring the part where Lucio said that he wouldnât be here for âA personal assistant,â Lucio repeated himself, but the look on Christianâs face said enough. He did not whave more than enough men following me around all day andââ
âOh no, Iâve been looking into women.â Lucio cut him off. âOr what, are you afraid that canât keep it in yolaughed at his own joke while for Christian it felt as if a dagger went through his heart.
âNo, Iâm telling you to stop lookingâI donât need a personal assistant.â Christian folded his arms.
âThatâalready planned a few interviews.â
âThen you cancel them,â Christian told him. âWe are on the verge of war, and youâre looking for personayou really think thatâs necessary right now?â
âI donât know for how much longer I will be here, so yesâitâs necessary,â Lucio spoke. Christian looked ahad become skinnier, but not enough for someone else to notice he was sick. Over the past few weeks, hbeen declining but even then Lucio had still remained positive. Lucio had reassured him that his meds wethat he would be around for a while, but that wasnât enough for Christian to stop worrying.
How can he pretend like heâs not dying? Christian thought whenever he would observe his fatherâs behaâFine, do whatever you want.â Christian shrugged it off as he didnât want to be the cause of his fatherâs hâAre you planning on telling mom? Stella? Mia? Anyone?â Christian wondered. He did not understand orLucio could keep this secret from the family.
âIâll tell them when I have to tell them,â Lucio mumbled before he walked away, leaving Christian all alonThat evening he went home with an uncomfortable pit in his stomach. He did not understand how his fathreatened by the fact that he was losing his life, and had decided to remain positive.
Emmanuella had moved out because it was for the best at the moment and probably wouldnât be arounbecause she was moving in with his uncle. He slowly began to realize how much he missed Serenaâs preswhenever he did something unexpected, her pout whenever she got embarrassedâ
and even her lax perHe could still not understand how he found someone like Serena, and still had the nerve to betray her. Swas originally not his typeâbut he ended up falling for her.
Christian turned his head to the liquor cabinet but quickly closed his eyes as he turned away again.
I candrink away my problems, he said to himself. Thatâs where it went wrong in the first place.
âSir, Isobel Sala wants to speak with you.â He heard one of the guards speak through the intercom.
âWeâenemies through the gates now? Let her in.â He chuckled upon hearing the voice of the same guard manSerena the package of the squirrel. He never learns.
And neither does she
