Chapter 20

Josie’s POV.

I took the elevator that led up to Jane’s apartment. There were female couples behind me and I could hear the sounds of their and mutterings. I didn’t mind them at all because my mind. was more focused on what Ashton had called me earlier to say.

To think he even pointed out that I was fucking poor? No, that was a low for him. It makes me seethe and I want somewhere I can pour out my rage.

He clearly had not changed. I refuse to believe he had.

The elevator stopped and the door pinged open, giving the ladies the opportunity to exit. I watched as they exited the elevator with their fingers interlinked and I sighed.

Love is something I hadn’t experienced before and seeing two people loving each other like that, makes me wonder if I wasn’t destined for it.

The elevator doors closed again and continued their journey to the upper floors and when I got to Jane’s

floor, I strutted away from it, walking the walkway, the white walls gleaming as the lights washed

over it.

Before I reached Jane’s door, I was already hearing my daughter’s voice as she played around with Tessa’s twins who were a bit and girl.

I smiled, knowing this was what Aria wanted for her to play with Tess’s kids because they were her best friends. I had asked Ms. Beth to bring her over before going home because it was a taco night.

I can’t wait to wash my thoughts away with a little booze and singing.

I rang the bell and I heard Tessa’s voice as she called out for me before opening the door.

“Yo, girl. What’s up?” She asked and I gave her a light hug and closed the door behind me. “Half good. Half…not okay.” I managed.

I waltzed through the hallway, already perceiving the smell of taco Jane must be cooking up.

Stopping by the children’s room, I leaned on the door frame, watching my daughter’s hair flailing as she jumped with a ball in her hand, wanting to throw it into a basket. Tessa smiled at the kids and left.

I was just about to leave when Aria turned and saw me.

“Yay! Mommy.” She ran over and spread her arms around my legs.

I crouched and her hair.

“My darling…” I hummed as she pulled back.

Tessa’s kids came over too and hugged me and I their hair.

The twins looked so hairy, the boy being overprotective of his kid sister. Right now, he already slung his arm over her neck.

“Mommy, Jeff’s teaching me how to play basketball.” Aria spluttered and I grinned.

“Really? That’s so great.” I said. That’d be my daughter’s new hobby now and I’d be surprised if she doesn’t pressure me to buy a basketball ball for her and also build a court in the house.

“Um, mommy.

Will you build a basketball court for me at home?”

I thought as much. New hobby, new demands.

“Oh, baby. Let’s discuss about this later?” I arched a brow and she beamed, hopefully.

“Yes, mama!” She spluttered so energetically as she my cheeks.

As they went back to playing their basketball, I tore off the remaining distance to the kitchen where the ladies were.

My brows creased as I noticed Kendra wasn’t there.

“Where’s Kendra?” I asked as I took a sit on one of the stools by the small island.

“Oh, girl, girl. Kendra had finally engaged herself

in several nights of fuck…” Jane teased.

“I don’t understand.” I stated, looking confused.

Tessa turned to face me with her jaw in her hand. A hint of smile hitched up the covers of her lips.

“What’s so confusing there? Kendra had stuck her body in the arms of a willing man.” Tessa said.

“Oh, when did it start?”

“Since the night of the club. You remember the stranger she rocked?” Jane said and that was when the recognition slammed into place in my mind.

Yes, that man. I knew the looks they gave each other were borderline lustful.

I sipped my lips, trying not to remember that pussy–melting .

I watched Jane wear even mitts in her palms when the oven dinged and she scooted closer, opening the oven to bring out cookies.

I knew already they were for the kids. She left them to cool before taking them to the kids with juice.

Now, we sat in her living room, watching a movie named Affairs, a forbidden romance, while we munched on the tacos she måde.

“Girl, you said you ain’t at work earlier, why?” Jane asked me, downing a mouthful of taco. She knocked back the remaining wine in her glass before gazing over at me.

Tessa equally looked at me with arched brows. “Did something happen?”

It was on the tip of my lips to wave the question off or lie but I was so confused on what to do I needed advice.

My boss sent a text earlier today, asking for a report from me. Only if he knew I hadn’t even

started.

“I’m in a mess, girls. I got a job to handle a client…” I started.

“So?” Jane cocked a brow, gesturing me to continue.

“The client turned out to be my ex..mate.” I gushed and the girl stared at me as if I had grown two heads.

“Ex–mate? That sucks.” Jane shrugged.

“Is he hot?” Came Tessa’s

voice. I didn’t know when a laugh escaped me. “I’m serious, is he?”

“Then you should work for him.” Tessa snapped. Tessa likes hot guys a lot she didn’t mind lowering her panties for hundreds of them.

“No. I can’t…” I insisted, giving them the look. “I don’t him anywhere near me, much less Aria. He…. broke

my heart years ago.” I said, fisting the air.

They asked what happened between us and I went into explanation of how Ashton broke my heart and mated with my best friend.

They both had pitiful looks on their faces but Jane suddenly propped up from her position. She

“Wait, his name kinda sounds familiar.”

I shot her a look as she said.

“The famous alpha doctor, Ashton?”

That was when it clicked into my mind. I had been hearing about the alpha doctor but I never knew it’d be him. That meant…he was already a billionaire because there was an invention he made recently that’s bestselling in the medical line.

Oh, goddess. My baby’s

daddy is a billionaire doctor.

My cheeks flushed at the thought. I never knew Ashton would grow so big like this.

“Really, Jane?” Tessa asked Jane who nodded. Looking back at me, she blurted. “Seriously Rose, you’ll take the job.”

Hearing that, my pride reared its head and I shook my head quickly, insisting. “No, I can’t. Even though he made an offer to help guys, he literally insulted me saying I look poor.”

They both gave each other a look again and shrugged.

“So, why don’t you hot like a badass and make the playboy alpha regret his decisions?” Jane suggested.

“For real, Rose this is your best opportunity to make him make. You’re his baby’s

mama, after all”

“I don’t plan on letting him know about Ariá ever, she’s mine alone. And I can’t take that offer. I’ve got to find another means to sort this out.”

They looked sullen at my words. I got up to rush to the restroom and pee when my phone buzzed. Crawling back to my side of the sofa, I sighed and grabbed my phone.

Reading the message from the Luna shark reminding me about my mortgage which they’d come for tomorrow, my pulse hit crazily over my ears and my heart began roaring.

“Oh, no. No. No.” I gasped and the girls rushed to my side.

“What’s wrong?” Tessa snatched the phone from my grip and read.

“Now this is where it gets messier.” She intoned in a voice barely above a whisper.

I have no other means I’m going to pay up the debts except…through my job.

My body went numb as only one option came to mind.

“I’m taking the job,” I said to my friends, hating myself for this but what other option do I have?

That night, as Aria and I got home I saw Diego standing there with…a bouquet in his hands.

“What’s going on?” I asked, totally surprised as the man came towards me, looking at me with an intense look in his eyes.
