[Chapter {21}]

The Alpha's Vampire

Callum's POV

I woke up with a startled gasp proceeding to groan at the feeling of getting up too fast. I almost started wondering if I was the one that groaned because my voice sounded scratchy and hoarse.

Getting up a lot slower and a bit more careful this time, I let my feet rest on floor just beneath me. I shivered as the cold seeped from the floor to my feet. Looking around I noticed that I was sat on a hospital bed in a nauseatingly white room.

Why the hell am I in a hospital again, moments of the last time I was awake flashed through my head leaving me with only one question. Nathan?.

I tried to stand but my legs felt like they were made of butter so I sat my ass back down. Thinking of what scheme that didn't involve walking to use in other to exit the room, I didn't notice the presence that entered.

"You're awake?" a voice asked more like stated, at least I hoped she was stating because if she seriously was asking if I was awake, I wouldn't know how to answer that, I'll probably go with 'no, not at all, this is all just a figment of your imagination'.

"Let me run some tests to see if you are hundred percent okay," the tall dark-skinned, judging from her lab coat....doctor said.

She removed a pen from her thick mass of dark brown curls and let me tell you, I didn't find the action weird at all. Lies! I must have damaged some vital part of my brain because the amount of internal arguments I'm having with myself is beyond absurd.

"Miss, can you get my mom," I asked hoping she knew who my mom was because honest to earth, I had no idea where the fucking hell I was at.

"Sure, I'll be back soon, in the mean time try not to do anything relatively stressful," she warns giving me a toothy grin before exiting the bland hospital room. Relatively stressful, pfft, I can't even move my damn legs.

Five minutes later a knock came through the person stepping in before I even had the chance to say 'come in'.

"Finally, you're awake. What were you doing, going at it with a virtual Nathan," she joked and I scowled at her, it's not like I could control how long I decided to stay unconscious.

"How are you my sweet child?" my mom cooed pulling me into a hug.

"Fine, how long have I been out?" I asked hugging her back my nose tingling from the scent of lavender coming from her hair which was repeatedly brushing my nose.

"About three days," she replied stroking my hair.

"Is Nathan awake yet?" I asked the question with so much calm it was impossible for anyone to see the turmoil going on inside my head and heart. But of course the woman in my arms isn't just anyone, she's my mom and she knows me better than anyone.

"Nathan's going to be fine Callum. Damon and Veronica did everything they could till they were positive he was safe. They managed to get all the silver out of him and although no one is sure when he'll wake up, he's completely out of danger so don't worry your little head okay," I nodded in reply taking it upon myself to accept the information with a strong mind.

My mom let go of me and moved to get up from the bed but I halted her actions. "Since Nathan's not awake and I have nothing to do, how about we have a little chat."

"Concerning what?" she seemed confused at my suggestion so I put her out of her misery.

"About everything, starting with I don't know....how you are a half witch but felt entitled to keep that little detail to yourself despite the fact that I'm your son," I spat anger from before resurfacing.

"Look Callum, I'm sorry but it really wasn't my intention to hide the truth from you for so long," she responded truthfully but I refused to let her off the hook that easily.

"Care to explain?" I asked not only to torment her, but also because I wanted a detailed narration on the history of my family and all the things my mother didn't 'intentionally' hide from me.

"Ah, where do I begin. You see your grandfather got married to a witch, Cecilia your powerful wicked witch of the west grandmother. Although supernatural beings mating to different species was seen to be a bit weird, since Cecelia was a powerful witch, and especially since witches and vampires were on fair terms, their marriage wasn't frowned upon.

Believe it or not but your grandmother was a cunning, conniving, backstabber and until she met your father, she used to get her hands dirty. Falling in love with my father made her go from the wicked witch of the west to just the witch of the west. The Queen during that era was very just and powerful, kind of like Matilda but the opposite," I laughed at the statement because Matilda really was a bitch.

"Anyways they did the deed and boom a half witch half vampire was born, things got complicated from there. For one my parents, your grandparents, where killed in a war against werewolves, the werewolves only found us because a human whom we had trusted gave them the information. That's how humans landed themselves in our black book and werewolves, they've always been our enemies for as long as I can remember. You can imagine how I felt when I found out I was in love with a human, devastated that's how. It felt like I was defying and disrespecting my parents by falling in love with him, but I couldn't help it, it was totally out of my control.

One thing led to another and the clan found out about your dad and killed him," there was a sad almost faraway look in her eyes which made me wonder how life would have been if dad was alive. I sort of missed him and would forever be grateful to that dream for letting me see a glimpse of what my dad was really like.

I placed a comforting hand on my mom's snapping her out of her daze.

"Sorry," she replied forcing a smile and I humored her by pretending I didn't notice it.

"In summary, our family has a thing for falling in love with members of a different species, you and I just happened to fall in love with the ones that spelt trouble," she said and I blushed at her assumption that I was in love with Nathan, could it even be referred to as an assumption if I told her that I was.

"I'm proud of you Callum, you did something I couldn't, you fought for your mate," she whispered and I could see the conflict in her eyes.

"Don't beat yourself up mom, I won Nathan by dumb luck and a bunch of free powers gifted to me because of the loss of dad. Without you, I would never have been able to rescue Nathan" I pulled her into a comforting hug which she returned sniffling ever so slightly.

"You won Nathan by determination and inextinguishable love, stop doubting yourself Callum."

"I will if you stop blaming yourself for dad's death," I negotiated and she gave me a pained smile.

"I'm not blaming myself for his death, It just hurts to talk about him," I nodded in understanding but something completely random and absurd surfed it's way through my thoughts.

"You know that our clan is without a leader right?" I asked.

"It's also without a name so what's your point," she replied narrowing her eyes at me, it took everything in me not to destroy my cool and collected facade.

"The clan needs a queen and you are more than fit to be one."

"Callum, the handbook says that the next leader should either be voted or should be whoever was capable of defeating the former leader, that person is you Callum."

I looked my mother dead in the eye, trying to get her to understand, "I can never be the leader of our clan mom, it's just not where I belong. They would be more accepting of you than they would be of me, as much as I will love to call that place a home seeing as it is where I grew up and all, there's really nothing left for me in the clan."

"Is this about, Nathan," she asked looking a bit sad.

"My love for Nathan only fueled half of my decision mom, I want this," she nodded in understanding giving me teary smile of encouragement.

"So what do you say, would you be my queen."

"I'd be honored," she responded standing up from the stiff hospital bed to curtsey a little.

"I won't be able to attend your coronation since that might sort of be disruptive, I also have Nathan to look after. Promise me that you'll give our clan the life that they truly deserve," I pleaded and she nodded.

"I promise," and I trusted my mom's word. She was after all the coolest mom to have ever walked this planet.

"Go on and claim your crown before some loser decides to fight you for it," I joked and she smiled.

"Rodger that son. Send my regards to Callum if he awakens before I make it home okay. You know how vampires are, the whole process will probably take about a week or so."

"I've got you mom, I'll let Nathan know everything once he's awake."

"I love you, Callum."

"Love you too, mother," I replied just as she disappeared in a trail of dark fog.
