– Chapter 141
Pregnant and Rejected By My Alpha Mate: Part 3
My lashes flutter open to reveal a stark white room, a bevy of sterile, chemical scents filling my nose. I feel weighed down and dizzy at once, like Iâm floating yet unable to move. I recognize this feeling, and Iâve woken up in this situation often enough to guess what happened.
I must have passed out from exhaustion, dehydration, stress, or all three. Iâm back in the hospital, hooked up to half a dozen beeping machines and wearing a scratchy, unflattering paper gown. The world is dark beyond the windows, and I glance around for a clock. It was around ten o-clock this morning when I attempted to call Bastien, but itâs after 8pm now. Iâve been asleep all day.
Slowly but surely, the events which passed before I lost consciousness filter back through my mind, and I immediately want to find Lila. She must have been so scared.
As if reading my mind, Odette appears in my doorway a moment later, with Lila peeking around her legs. âMommy!â
âHello little bean!â I greet her with as much enthusiasm as I can muster. Pushing myself up to a sitting position, I extend my arms to the pup, âcome here and give Mommy a hug.â
She toddles over without hesitation, clambering onto the bed and into my arms and ignoring Odetteâs soft caution to be gentle with me. I donât want my sweet daughter to be gentle any more than she does, I want her as close as possible. Her warm little body smothers me with affection, and I cuddle her close.
âHow are you?â I ask anxiously, kissing her soft cheeks.
âMommy you scared me!â She says, a note of accusation heavy in her voice. âYou fain-ed and everyone got all loud.â
âIâm sorry, angel.â I breathe, âMommy just got very tired very fast.â
âCuz of da baby?â She inquired curiously.
âThatâs right.â I agree, rocking her gently from side to side.
âAlright now, little one.â Odette tries to intervene, caressing Lilaâs hair. âYour Mommy needs her rest.â
A nurse pokes her head around the doorway and echoes my mother-in-lawâs advice, âCareful now, she really shouldnât be in bed with you â though Iâm glad to see youâre awake.â
I glare at them both, Nuzzling my pupâs sweet-smelling skin and glowering over her shoulder.
âEasy Mama Bear,â Dr Kane moves around the nurse with a wide smile, âShe can stay right where she is.â
The nurse looks like she wants to object, but the chief physician shoots her a quelling stare and she backs down immediately. He strides further into the room, greeting Odette warmly before turning to me, âHow are you feeling Selene?â
âIâm alright.â I lie, in truth I feel like Iâve been hit by a bus.
I can tell no one is convinced by my falsehood, but my Lila Bean saves me from being called out. She glances warily at the handsome young doctor, âWhose dat?â
âIâm Dr. Kane.â He introduces himself. âI took care of your Mommy when she was carrying you, and Iâm taking care of her and the new baby now.â
âIf youâre taking careâf her, whyâs she so sick?â Lila grumbles, surprising us all.
I try to laugh, but even that seems to take too much energy. The others laugh for me. âThat canât be helped sweetheart. Iâd actually be a lot more sick if Dr Kane wasnât helping me.â I remember well how difficult it was to get Drâs in Asphodel to take my condition seriously. They wouldnât prescribe me the anti-nausea drugs I requested until Iâd been hospitalized twice in one week.
Lila doesnât seem convinced, especially not when Dr Kane steps forward and reaches for her. âI wonât make you leave, but letâs just rearrange you a teensy bit so I can take a look at your Mommy, hmm?â
Lila stubbornly shakes her head and hugs me tighter, burying her face in my neck. Stroking my hand in soothing patterns up and down her spine, I give the Dr a beseeching look. âI hate to ask, but could you come back later? After this one has gone to bed?â
This gets my pupâs attention. Her little head pops up. âI sleep here, with you, Mommy.â
âSweetheart, I wish you could stay with me, but itâs not allowed.â I sigh, pressing my lips to her hair.
âBut Mommy, wanna stay!â Lila insists, sounding near tears.
Dr Kane eyes me as if trying to decipher whether I really do want her to stay or if Iâm using the hospital rules as an excuse to give me some time to rest up alone. But it isnât an excuse, I really do want her nearby. It was hard enough being away from her when everything was fine, but now that our lives are such a mess it gets harder and harder to let her out of my sight.
Reading my expression, Thomas nods, âIâll tell you what, Ms. Lila. If you go get a cookie with your Grandma now so that I can have a minute with your Mommy, Iâll fix it so you can stay with her tonight.â
âBut Dr-â The nurse objects looking horrified.
âSheâs the Alphaâs mate.â He reminds her sharply. âIf there was ever anyone worthy of making exceptions for, itâs her.â
âYes sir,â she sulks, looking like she doesnât agree. I suppose it will make her life harder to have to work around my pup all night. Though I donât want to make her job more difficult, Iâm also unwilling to give up my pup. After all, itâs only one night â and sheâs the most important thing here.
âWhat do you say, Lila bean?â I ask, âCan you give us a minute?â
She gazes up at me with wide eyes, âDo I have to?â She murmurs, gesturing towards the doctor. âI donâ like him.â
I smother a sigh, I canât say I blame the little girl for being less trustworthy and closed off to new people with everything thatâs happened, but I also canât encourage it. âIf you want to stay with Mommy tonight, you need to go with Gramma for a little while.â
Sulking and dragging her feet, Lila slides off the bed and places her small hand in Odetteâs, walking out of the room with a forlorn glance over her shoulder.
When weâre alone Dr Kane approaches my bedside. âAlright you, tell the truth now, how are you feeling?â
âTerrible.â I admit. âI donât know what happened, the meds were working.â
âUh-huh,â Thomas assesses smoothly. âHave you been under any undue stress this week?â
Peering up at him from beneath my lashes, I admit, âmaybe a little.â
âThatâs what I thought.â He nods, looking around, âIs Bastien here somewhere? We really need to talk about making some lifestyle changes so that you can avoid landing back here again.â
I drop my gaze, feeling a red flush work its way up my cheeks. âActually heâs still out of town.â
Dr Kaneâs eyes widen, and I can tell heâs shocked the Alpha would leave me for so long when Iâm in this condition. Its the same look of surprise and displeasure everyone whoâs out of the loop dons. If only they knew what was going on, if only they knew he had no choice. The physician recovers quicker than most, wiping his countenance of any emotion. âIâll call him then.â
Gulping, I murmur, âActually Iâm afraid thatâs not possible either.â Nervously checking to make sure no one can overhear us, I add. âHeâs sort of off the grid.â
This time Dr. Kane makes no effort to hide his feelings. âYouâre kidding.â
âUnfortunately not.â I confess.
âSelene,â Thomas sighs, âIâm sorry but that is not acceptable.â
âI did this on my own once before.â I remind him with an anemic shrug.
âThat was different.â Dr. Kane growls, you didnât have a choice then.
âI donât have one now either.â I inform him, âThings are complicated at the moment. Bastien will be back as soon as he can, I just have to hang on a little while longer.â
âAre you sure about that?â Thomas questions, âI donât mean to question the Alphaâs commitment to you, but I canât imagine any mate cutting off contact even if they did have to leave for a time.â
âBastien loves me more than anything.â I tell Dr. Kane confidently, âheâll be home before we know it.â
âThat he will.â Drakeâs deep voice sounds behind the doctor, and my heart swells a little when I catch sight of him.
âDrake!â I exclaim, âYou didnât have to come all the way down here.â
âWhat, and miss seeing you in that fabulous gown? Fat chance.â He jokes, âNow whatâs this I hear about you collapsing in the middle of the day and scaring everyone half to death?â
Grinning sheepishly, I reply. âI guess it was a bit dramatic.â
âJust a bit.â Drake teases, âyou know if you want attention all you have to do is ask, you donât have to land yourself in the hospital.â
âAlpha her condition is not a joking matter.â Dr Kane interjects, suddenly looking so serious that Iâm taken aback.
âDonât worry, Dr.â Drake responds smoothly, âweâre just trying to lighten the mood a bit.â
âWell Iâm afraid thereâs not much to make light about.â Thomas informs us grimly. âSelene, part of why I wanted to speak to you alone is because your blood tests were quite concerning. Iâm afraid weâre not going to be able to release you yet.â
âWell I already knew that much.â I say, trying to stay positive. âI already knew I was spending the night.â
Glancing back and forth between us, Dr Kane exhales heavily, âNo. I mean we canât release you until your labs improve. Which means youâre going to be here for some time.â
âHow long?â Drake clarifies.
âIt could be days.â Dr Kane explains, âor it could be weeks.â
I swing my eyes to Drake. How the hell am I suppose to help run the pack and raise my daughter from a hospital bed, âthere has to be a mistake.â
Dr Kane shakes his head in denial. âIâm afraid there isnât. This is the way it has to beâ
