– Chapter 163
Pregnant and Rejected By My Alpha Mate: Part 3
Selene
Every mouth in the room is gaping wide open in shock. From the looks on their faces, you would have thought Iâd announced I was planning a ritual human sacrifice, rather than proposing a trip across the continent. When they finally regain their senses everyone begins speaking at once, half shouting objections and already trying to talk me out of it. In truth I canât really decipher one personâs words from anotherâs, but I certainly hear Aiden when he thunders: âAre you out of your mind?â
âNo, Iâm very much in my mind, thank you.â I retort, trying to stay calm amidst all the upset. The last thing I need is to have an anxiety attack from so many people yelling. That would hardly convince them Iâm up for the journey.
âSelene, you canât go to Tartarus.â Drake insists in a much more reasonable tone than either of Bastienâs Betas. âBlaise is hunting Volanas. One look at you and youâll be done for.â
âWe can disguise her eyes.â Helene announces, though I have no idea how weâd accomplish such a thing. When I went to Asphodel I attempted to use color contacts but it was no use. The magic of my eyes shone through the artificial lenses as if they werenât even there.
âNo.â Donovan chimes in, âItâs out of the question. Bastien would have our heads on a platter.â
âBastien doesnât even know his own name right now.â I remind them. âIf I was in his place, heâd move mountains to help me. I canât just stand by and let this happen.â
âThatâs different.â Drake sighs.
âWhy?â I demand. âWhy is it any different for me? Because Iâm a woman? In case youâve forgotten, I have powers none of you possess.â
âNo.â Donovan sighs, gesturing to the soft swell of my stomach. âBecause youâre a breeding mother.â
âSo what, Iâm weak?â I challenge. âIâm incapable of helping my mate?â
âSelene you can barely go a week without being hospitalized!â Aiden exclaims.
âThat isnât fair.â I fight back, feeling increasingly tired of everyone treating me as though Iâm made of glass. Honestly, the way people behaved youâd think being pregnant was a terminal illness, not a miracle of life. âIâm getting stronger every day.â
âYou forget that you may very well be carrying Bastienâs heir.â Donovan interjects, âItâs not just about your strength, but the risk to the baby.â
âDonât you dare insinuate that this childâs safety isnât my highest priority.â I snarl, every ounce of maternal instinct I possess rearing up protectively. âNone of you could ever care as much as I do about this baby. If Iâm willing to go, itâs because I feel itâs worth the risk, and that I can succeed.â
âWhy are we even discussing this?â Aiden questions, âThereâs no need.â He continues, trying a different tactic, âThe letter says heâs coming home.â
âAnd by the time he does, it will be too late.â I cry, âYou read it as well as I did leave Elysium immediately or else. If Iâm still here when he gets back, thereâs no telling what heâll do. Every day Arabella continues to mislead him, the more danger the pack is in. We canât wait for them to come back home.â
âSelene,â Odette begins in a soothing tone, âyouâre upset-â
âYes, I am.â I agree, interrupting her before she can finish her undoubtedly condescending remark. âBut that doesnât mean Iâm wrong.â Spinning around to look at them all in turn, I declare, âI have to go. I have to do this for him.â
âWhat about Lila?â Drake inquires, âWhat about Frederic?â
Taking a deep breath, I look hopefully at Drake and Sophie, âI would ask you to take Lila to Asphodel for a while. Just until weâre back.â
Drake tugs Sophie to his side and murmurs something in her ear, so low I canât even hear what heâs saying. After a moment Sophie nods, and Drake looks up at me. âOf course, if this is happening weâd be happy to take her.â
âThank you.â I sigh, thinking about the second part of his question. âAnd Frederic, well itâs probably better if Iâm out of his reach. People are already looking into his background, it wonât be much longer before the truth is exposed. Heâll keep trying to use me as a prop to defend himself if Iâm still around. But he canât do that if he doesnât know where I am.â
âThat raises another question, Selene.â Donovan asserts grimly. âWhat would you tell the pack? How can we possibly explain your absence?â
âTell them Iâm on bedrest.â I supply simply, âOr that I went to a treatment facility outside of the territory because I didnât trust Elysian institutions after what happened with Frederic.â
âThatâs not a bad idea.â Odette acknowledges. âNo one would fault her and it would help build resistance to Frederic.â
âOkay.â Aiden grouses, glances back and forth between us. âLetâs say we agree.â He suggests, âLetâs say you go to Tartarus and find Bastien and Arabella. What happens then? What are you going to do? How are you going to break her spell or whatever sheâs done to him?â
âThe only reason Arabella has been able to do this is because weâre not together.â I argue. âIf we were his wolf would recognize me. Heâd be able to feel that I truly am his mate and realize she was full of shit.â
To my surprise, itâs not the Betas or Drake who contradict me, but Helene. âIâm afraid itâs not that simple.â She announces. âThe letter acknowledges that you may be his mate, but sheâs clearly convinced him that you tricked him into loving you. Being near you will make it harder for her certainly, but he doesnât remember you exist. All he knows is what sheâs told him.â
âAll the more reason I have to go.â I insist. âI have to help him remember me, before she convinces him to do something truly drastic.â
âFine, but if this is happening you canât go alone.â Donovan proclaims, âif youâre determined to do this, weâre going with you.â
âNo.â Odette shoots him down immediately. âWe canât all go. We already made that mistake once. If Selene and Drake are both leaving, you and Aiden have to stay to run the pack. Iâll go with her.â
The Betas glance at one another nervously, âOdette, please donât take this the wrong way,â Aiden broaches, âbut youâre not exactly a spring chicken anymore.â
âIâm sorry, is there a right way for me to take that?â My mother in law growls. âIâll have you know Iâve seen more action in my time that you could ever dream of, pup.â
âPlease donât argue about this.â I interrupt. âI donât need a chaperone, and if anyone was going to come along, well, Iâd ask Helene.â
Helene smiles softly, patting my hand. âThere now, a good idea at last.â She teases. âIâll go with Selene. She can keep training on the way, and Iâm not important to the pack. No one will miss me.â
âAre you sure?â I press, though Iâm already breathing a sigh of relief.
âOf course.â Helene says, as if it was obvious, âyou arenât ready to face Blaise alone.â
I wince as the words leave her mouth, but itâs too late. The others are already jumping on the statement. âFace Blaise?â Drake repeats, âwho said anything about facing Blaise?â
Helene stares at him intently, not offended by his objection, but not giving him an inch of leeway. âYou cannot change what is fated. All of you are so determined to interfere with the Goddessâs plans because you do not like them, but they are what they are.â Giving me an approving nod, she continues, âAmong you only Selene is accepting what is rather than what she thinks should be.â
âAre you saying itâs her fate to fight Blaise?â Odette asks weakly.
âHer destiny.â Helene corrects gently, âJust as it is mine to help her on her quest.â
My mentorâs words fill me with pride, but also with trepidation and fear. Sheâs alluded to me facing Blaise in the past, but sheâs never been so explicit about what my future has in store.
âIs she destined to win?â Sophie pipes up for the first time, âI mean, will she come back?â
âNot even I know that.â Helene admits simply.
âEither way, I have to go.â I reiterate. âNot because of fate, or destiny or anything else. I have to go for Bastien. Please stop trying to talk me out of it and just support me.â
Thereâs a long beat of silence, all the members of my makeshift family thinking hard and exchanging meaningful looks. âAll right.â Donovan breaks first. âIf youâre certain this is the way it has to be, weâll support you.â
The others mutter in agreement, and a wave of relief washed over me. âThank you.â
Right on cue, Lilaâs bedroom door opens, and Lila comes toddling out rubbing her eyes. Sheâs still half asleep from her nap, which is a guarantee sheâs looking for cuddles. I Intercept her halfway across the room, gathering her into my arms and feeling a rush of warmth as she snuggles happily into my embrace. Then she asks a question Iâve been absolutely dreading, one I donât have the first clue how to answer. âMommy whatâs going on?â
