Chapter 5
Obscure Motives
Gwen Hughes ------->
Chapter Five: People do. Monsters Don't.
Grayson's POV
(Wednesday Morning 8:00am)
"You are questioning everything about love. Is it worth it? You gave it a chance and now, your heart is broken. Do you understand?" I said sternly.
"Yeah, I think so." Amber answered.
"Having a beautiful voice is one thing, singing with emotion is what sells. Lets take it from the top." I left the booth and went out where the producers were.
What did I do wrong? I remember the
Love being strong.
It was you and I against the world,
Now am all alone.
Am losing control of my life.
Why Me?
"How do you do it?" Ross asked amazed how Amber just sang that verse.
"She just needed a little push that's all." I answered smiling at the amazing sound coming from Amber.
"That has to be the lead single for sure."
"No. When in Doubt is the lead single."
"Which song is that?" Ross asked sipping his morning coffee.
"I just finished writing it with Rick. From the looks of the lyrics, it's gonna be a hit."
We spent another 50 minutes recording the song. We started the song yesterday and today was just the finishing touches. I left Ross in charge since I have one more meeting until I start off to Gwen's stupid engagement party. I don't even know why she decided to have it all the way out there. There are a lot of places right here in LA that could host her stupid party. I walked through the lobby and found David waiting for me as always. He opened the door for me and we were out. David rushed passed me so that he could open the door to the SUV for me.
"To the office sir?" He asked once he himself got settled in the driver's seat.
"Yes David." And with my order David was easing into the light morning traffic. The recording studio is about 15 minutes away from my office building. We reached the building in no time.
9:15am.
David opened the door for me and motioned me to get out. I climb out of the car and straight into the building. Somehow, the sight of people stiffening up everytime am passing through the the lobby kind of gives me joy.
"My man!" Ross yells for me as I entered the elevator.
"Ross." I nod my head saying hello. How the hell does he always beat me getting to the office?
"So when are we leaving?" Ross asks as the elevator starts it's ascending.
"Leaving going where?"
"Gwen's stupid engagement party of course!"
"Find your own ride." I say and put my hand forward telling him to get out.
"Fine. I'll see you there pretty boy." The elevator closes and I put the code for my office. Once the doors open again, Emily is already standing by the elevator ready.
"Go."
"Skittles is threatening to sue you because of the drop. There is a lady who works on the fourth floor asking for maternity leave even though she is barely two months pregnant. She also is threatening to sue if she doesn't get it." Emily explains.
"Set up a meeting with Skittles. Tell him if he doesn't show up, I will be the one doing the suing. And the pregnant lady, tell Ross to deal with it. Is that all?" I stop walking and face her.
"I believe so." Emily says.
"I have one more meeting then I have to start that two hour drive. Ugh! Why did I give David the rest of the off again?" I rub my temple in frustration.
"Because he asked not to go to the party sir." Emily answers making me annoyed.
"It was a rhetorical question." I scold her.
9:45am.
"I am not looking for any business partnership, so if this is why you asked for a meeting with me, you are wasting your time." I tell Jim Howard, the idiotic billionaire.
"I am very powerful. I could take this record label to the next level." Jim says.
"The level where the world gets punished by music made by your tone-deaf daughter? I don't think so!" I say grabbing my keys, and wallet.
"Look here Grayson. I know you have been in the business for like a day, but you will not insult my daughter in my fucking presence. Understand?" His voice gets rough through the phone.
"Technically, you are not really here. Have a nice day." I ended the call as I headed out the door. I cannot believe Gwen is actually getting married. There was once a time that I wanted that, but as my father said, 'love is overrated'.
"Have a nice day, Sir." Emily says snapping me out of my thoughts.
"You too Emily. Call me if anything." I get in the elevator and start my descending. Be nice. That is the only thing I can tell myself, because at this point, to be honest I am angry. How can you get engaged to someone after a month? Thats why people have 72 day marriages. I reach the lobby and the doors open. I walk sternly all the way outside and get the car from David.
"Please tell Gwen am sorry for not being able to make it." David says as I got into the driver's seat.
"No problem." I start my car and wave to David, with that I begin my two hour journey into the desert. After entering the freeway, I click CD number six, since it has always been my favorite. I skip to track number five the underrated track. I bob my head as the beat begins.
Most important thing in business is
honesty, integrity, hard work, family
Never forgetting where we came from
Poor me, dad was gone, finally got my dad back
Liver bad he wouldn't live long, they snatched my dad back
Guidance I never had that, streets was my second home
Welcomed me with open arms provided a place to crash at.
Sometimes it is scary how one person can write a song, a lyric, thinking it only applies to them. But this song, is basically describes my life. American Gangster has to be the best album Jay-Z has ever done.
And I don't need no hook for this shit!
Going at 85 miles an hour, it looks like am going to make it in time. Just another round of American Gangster and I should be there. I hope this guy who is engaged to my one and only sister is worth all this trouble. He better find a cure for cancer or I will automatically hate him.
As I arrive at the hotel, I am both relieved and annoyed. Relieved, I couldn't take anymore driving; hint I have a driver. Annoyed, its like 105 degrees outside, and humid. I stop my car at the front as the valet takes it. I'm greeted by the cool air inside the building and boy am I glad. Signs pointing to the ballroom that reads, Gwen and Liam's Engagement Party.
"Grayson!" Gwen screams the minute she sees me. Why do girls always have to scream when they see someone? Like, what the hell is wrong?
"Gwen." I say trying to get out of her embrace. "So where is the lucky guy?" I ask politely.
"Well.... Promise me something first?" She says with pleading eyes.
"What?"
"Promise me you will give him another chance."
"What do you mean by another chance? You said I didn't know him." Something is really wrong. Something is not right at all.
"You do know him."
"Gwen?! Who the fuck are you engaged to?" I ask her harshly.
"Hello Grayson." A voice comes from behind me, but it is unrecognizable. It's not that deep, but very masculine at the same time. I turn around slowly, scared to who am going to see. After I make my 180 degree turn, I come face to face with the monster himself. The worst of the worst. The fuck ups of the fuck ups.
"William?!" I scream. "You are engaged to William?!"
What the hell? Nope! This has to be a joke? There is no way in hell, my sister is getting married to William. There is not way!
"Before you overreact, Liam and I are very happy together." Gwen starts off. "Now, if you don't mind, we have a party to attend." And with that, Gwen grabs William's dirty hand and pulls him towards the ballroom.
1:10pm.
With steam practically coming out of my ears, I walk towards the ballroom. I look around the room until I see Ross. I walk over to his table and take a sit.
"Finally. What took you so long?" Ross asks taking a sip of his champagne.
"Gwen cannot marry that guy." I spit out.
"Why not?"
"She just can't. I will be right back." I stand up and head towards the table where Gwen and the idiot were sitting. I stand in front of both of them and just stared at them.
"Please don't make a scene." Gwen lowered her head.
"I won't make a scene when you decide to marry someone decent." I say it loudly gaining everyone's attention. Gwen stands up and walks out of the room. I go after her knowing we have to talk about this. I walk outside and the humid literally hits me and I almost fall.
"What the fuck was that?" Gwen begins.
"That was me telling you the truth. You can't marry him." I try to reason with her.
"You are being unreasonable." Gwen says like she is trying to announce it to the world.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I ask.
"People change."
"People do. Monsters don't." I say while looking at her.
"You know what, Fuck you!" Gwen turns around dramatically flipping her hair over her shoulder. What a drama queen!
"Gwen, I love you. Please don't do this." I grab her arm stopping her from walking away.
"Don't. Just don't." She yanks her arm away from my grip and she runs away. Why? For once, why can't things go the way they are supposed to go? But no. I pace back and forth trying to figure out my next move.
"I don't give a shit how much it's gonna cost from LA to here. Danny am in this fucking mess because of your dumb ass!" I hear a voice from a distance. My eyes follow the voice to the most beautiful curly haired boy I have ever seen. He seems to be very upset from his tone. That makes two of us.
"Danny I swear to God, you're going to regret..." He doesn't finish his sentence because that is when he notices my staring. We make eye contact and neither of us was breaking the connection.
"Am sorry, can I help you with something?" He asks in an annoyed voice. Great! I find someone who I think is very beautiful, and they are annoyed of me.
"Staring is rude you know?" He speaks again.
"Sorry it's just, you're very beautiful." I answer honestly. He seems sweet and innocent. I just want to take him and hide him from the world.
"Danny, am gonna have to call you back." He says putting his phone away. I walk over to him, trying to keep calm.
"Grayson Hughes. CEO of GH Records." I say formally introducing myself.
"Is that supposed to impress me?" He asks.
"No. But that's how I always introduce myself." I respond trying to hide the fact that I was trying to impress him.
"Oh." He say and sits back on the chair. "Fuck my ass!" He screams making my dick jump.
"Am sorry, what?" I ask making sure he said what he said.
"The chair is hot, and I just burnt my ass. What did you think I meant?" He said with a challenging look.
"Nothing. Absolutely nothing." I look down in shame. How can I think that? "Am sorry, I didn't get your name."
"I know, I didn't give it to you." The fine ass, brat says.
"From the earlier conversation, it seems like you want to go LA. And since am about to leave, I could give you a ride if you want." I say finally catching his interest.
"Really?" He turns around and comes inches away from me.
"Yeah, why not?" I smile at him.
"Are you a psycho killer?" He asks as he takes a step back.
"No am not a psycho killer. I literally just introduced myself 30 seconds ago." I say to him.
"Sorry, I wasn't paying attention." He Shruggs and takes his phone out of his pocket. He dials a number and puts the phone to his ear.
"Danny? Never mind. Someone has offered me a ride home. If he ends up murdering me, tell my dad I love him no matter what." He says looking at me up and down.
"Am not a killer!" I say defending myself.
"Don't judge a book by its cover." He says while walking away from me to talk in private. He is so intriguing. And he is very beautiful, did I mention that? I take in all his physical appearance and damn do I like what I see. The thing about him is that I feel different about him. Usually I know when someone is a one night stand or not. But him, I can't figure it out. All I know I want him, for a while.
"Okay, Mr. Serial Killer let's go." He says in an excited voice.
"One condition." I say making him frown.
"What?"
"Tell me your name."
"Terry Baker. Happy?"
"Very. Shall we Terry?"
"We shall."
