Chapter 160
Missing Mrs. Lowry: The Billionaire’s Wakeup Call
Chapter 160
Megan, fearing Sullivan might do something even crazier, nald in a soft voice, âLetâs go.â
Sullivan slightly loosened his grip on her
She turned to say goodbye to Begonia, who gave her a faint smile. âMegan, drop by whenever you have time. My mom really likes youâ
Megan nodded.
Ignoring Sullivan, she walked straight to the black Bentley parked at the curb, opened the passenger door, and got in.
Sullivan took a step back before following her into the car.
Soon, the car drove off.
Begonia stood there for a long time, until his mother came downstairs and joined him. She gently patted his shoulder, smiling lightly. âNo wonder you like her.â
11 I
Begonia shoved his hands into his coat pockets. âMom, I think I was a step too late.â
Cynthia linked her arm with his, still smiling. âThen keep her in your heart. Be there for her when sheâs in troubleâ¦â
Sullivan drove fast.
After about five minutes, the car stopped abruptly on a deserted roadside, screeching to a halt.
Megan sat quietly.
She softly began, âToday is Cynthiaâs birthday. He was just giving me a lift after work. Donât think too much of it.â
Sullivan looked out into the night and said just as softly, âAre you explaining this to me or are you afraid I go after him?â
Megan was blunt, Iâm afraid youâll go after him!â
Sullivan took out a cigarette, lit it, but before he could take a puff, he snuffed it out. Next, the sound of a seat belt being unbuckled. He leaned closer, gripping Meganâs shoulders. He stared into her eyes and asked in a very low and soft voice, âDo you like him? Have you ever fantasized about being with him?â
Megan slapped him.
He seemed to have anticipated the slap and didnât dodge. He had provoked it on purpose.
The atmosphere in the car turned tense.
Megan didnât want things to escalate, she wanted to leave, but as she reached for the door handle, Sullivan locked the doors. Sullivan watched her, then leaned back in his seat and spoke softly. âMegan, Iâve continued to look after Cressida and pay for her medical treatments not because I like her nor just out of gratitude for something that happened years ago. There are reasons I canât fully explain. Sheâs lost a leg, canât have children, and now sheâs facing multiple organ failure. She doesnât have much longer.â
He turned to look at her. âShe was never my lover.â
Megan remained silent.
Sullivan then gazed back out into the night, his voice becoming even huskler, âMegan, I donât know how to make a woman happy. I used to think all it took was money, expensive jewelry, or being good in bedâ¦â
He looked somewhat embarrassed.
Megan, however, responded coolly, âAre you done? Can you let me out now?â
Her hand was held down.
Sullivanâs expression was calm, his grip on her imperceptible.
Megan couldnât move, and so they remained in a deadlock.
After a long while, he finally let her go and fook out two things from the glove compartment.
One was a car key, the other was a key to Quinn Havenâs front gate.
Sullivanâs gaze was deep, tenderly saying, âDrive yourself to appointments from now on, and get a taxi home. Also, Quinn Haven has been renovated. Your dad and Cora can move in anytime.â
Megan didnât take them. She looked down at the Quinn Haven key, her voice soft and hoarse, âI donât want it, Sullivan! Stop trying to please me with these gestures. Weâre over. Even if weâre technically married, itâs just in nameâ¦.
Sullivan watched her, and after a long pause, he asked softly. âMegan, does it mean no matter what I do, you wonât accept it, and you wonât change your mind?â
09:39
âYes!â The car was dimly lit, Megan blinked back tears, repeating, âYes!â
At the top floor of the Lowry Group headquarters.
