Chapter 106
The Mysterious Billionaire and His Substitute Bride
It was already late at night. There were no buses, and only a few taxis were available.
Ethan and Janet slowly walked back along the quiet road.
Janet hadnât stopped crying ever since they left the Lind familyâs house.
Ethan took off his jacket and wrapped it around Janet, holding her in his arms. He was now wearing only a white T-shirt that clung to his chiseled body.
âDonât you want to ask me something?â Janet sniffed and looked up at him. The pool of tears in her eyes sparkled under the dim streetlight.
âWell, I have a lot to ask. I just donât know where to begin.â Ethan wiped the tears from the corner of her eyes with his thumb. His calm, resonant voice made her cry harder.
Ethan couldnât watch her break down before him.
Crying was one thing he didnât like about Janet. He wanted to make sure she didnât shed a tear again.
âWhen I was one year old, Bernie and Fiona adopted me. But a year later, Jocelyn was born. Since they had a daughter of their own, they stopped caring about me. Hannah was a maid in the Lind family.
She was the one who raised me. I was living with Hannah in the countryside before I grew up and came to the city. Bernie and Fiona gave Hannah some money every month. However, that was not enough to meet our expenses. They didnât bother increasing the monthly allowance. Hannah bought things for me with her money. She doesnât have any family, and I have been taking care of her. She is all I have. Now, to make things worse, Fiona has secretly intercepted the liver for Hannahâs transplant. I donât know how long it will take to find another donor. I donât know how she is going to manage.â
Janet sniffed, gasping for breath. Ethan pulled out a tissue from his pocket and handed it to her. Seeing Janet hitching with sobs, he pulled her into his arms.
âSo you told me about your deal with them in a fit of anger?â Ethan asked softly, his chin resting on her head.
He felt sorry for her.
He had thought that Janet was an optimistic carefree woman but didnât think she shouldered a lot of burden and responsibilities on her own.
âIt was because they broke their promise.â Leaning against his strong chest, Janet frowned and complained like a child.
Her answer amused Ethan. He hailed a taxi and pulled her inside.
Janet hugged him tighter and pressed her face against the crook of his neck. âDonât worry!â Ethan stroked her hair. âI have a lot of friends. Iâll help you figure something.â
Janetâs head became hot and heavy after all the crying. She felt sleepy. Ethanâs embrace comforted her. She rubbed her cheek against his chest and snuggled up to him.
Silence fell. The ride was quiet, except for the whooshing of the wind.
âIâve lying to you the whole time. Arenât you mad at me?â Janet asked, interlacing her fingers with his.
âHow could every part of his body look beautiful?â She looked at the blue veins running across his muscular hand in awe.
Ethan let her play with his hand as he watched her intently. The flickering light cast a soft glow on his face.
He put his other arm around her shoulder and sighed. âWhen I found out that you deceived me, I was furious. But later, I was simply glad that I didnât marry Jocelyn. Fortunately, it was youâ
