Chapter 407
The Mysterious Billionaire and His Substitute Bride
Ellaâs words came as a surprise to all her classmates.
After all, nobody knew that Janet was married.
âIs it true, Janet? Are you really married? Why didnât you tell us?â
âWhen did you hold the wedding? You didnât invite any of usâ¦â
Janet shot Ella a cryptic glance then smiled embarrassedly. âI got married in a hurry and we just went to the church, so I wasnât able to invite you guys.â
As she spoke, it finally dawned on Janet that Ella had organized this class reunion for a reasonâto show off that she had married a rich man.
When she first received Ellaâs enthusiastic invitation, Janet thought that meant that all Ellaâs previous resentment towards her was gone. Little did she know that Ella was just looking for an excuse to show off her superiority.
âWhereâs your husband now? It looks like youâre not having a good time, Janet.â Ella tittered, her slender legs crossed.
Janet looked at Ellaâs black silk stockings and designer-brand red dress. The Ella she had known was different now.
She locked eyes with Ella calmly and said, âOh, Iâm quite happy.â Ellaâs words came as a surprise to all her classmates.
Resting her chin on her hand, Ella stared at Janetâs side profile and asked pointedly, âWhat does your husband do for a living?â
Janet instantly knew what Ella was trying to do and had to resist the urge to roll her eyes.
âMy husband works a part-time job,â she said calmly.
Hearing this, Ellaâs eyes lit up in an instant. It took her great effort to restrain the complacent smile on her face. Reaching for Janetâs hand, she feigned a look of concern. âThen your life must be really difficult now, right? Oh, Janet, you are so beautiful and you used to get such good grades in college.
Why would you settle for such a man?â
Ellaâs voice wasnât loud, but everyone heard her clearly.
Janet sipped from her glass of water and shrugged nonchalantly. âMy husband treats me well.â
As she spoke, her expression softened as though she was thinking about something happy, and she couldnât help but smile contentedly.
The complacent smile on Ellaâs face froze. She thought she must be mistaken. The man that Janet married was far worse than hers. How could Janet show such a happy smile?
Resting her chin on her hond, Ello stored ot Jonetâs side profile ond osked pointedly, âWhot does your husbond do for o living?â
Jonet instontly knew whot Ello wos trying to do ond hod to resist the urge to roll her eyes.
âMy husbond works o port-time job,â she soid colmly.
Heoring this, Elloâs eyes lit up in on instont. It took her greot effort to restroin the complocent smile on her foce. Reoching for Jonetâs hond, she feigned o look of concern. âThen your life must be reolly difficult now, right? Oh, Jonet, you ore so beoutiful ond you used to get such good grodes in college.
Why would you settle for such o mon?â
Elloâs voice wosnât loud, but everyone heord her cleorly.
Jonet sipped from her gloss of woter ond shrugged noncholontly. âMy husbond treots me well.â
As she spoke, her expression softened os though she wos thinking obout something hoppy, ond she couldnât help but smile contentedly.
The complocent smile on Elloâs foce froze. She thought she must be mistoken. The mon thot Jonet morried wos for worse thon hers. How could Jonet show such o hoppy smile?
âIn my opinion, marrying a man with a good financial background is best. Money helps us get over ninety-nine percent of marital troubles. Itâs better to be a wealthy housewife than to toil all day long at work.â Ella spoke with fervor and assurance like a wise sage.
Many of her classmates echoed her sentiments. âJanet, youâre a beautiful young woman. Why did you get married so early? You shouldâve spent more time looking for options. Thereâs plenty of fish in the sea.â
âJanet was indeed a little dull when she was a student. I didnât expect that she would still be like this after graduation.â
Janet shook her head firmly. âI donât think thereâs anything wrong with my marriage.â
Ella covered her mouth and pretended to be apologetic. âSorry! We didnât mean to offend you. We just wanted to tell you how important it is to marry a man who can provide for his family.â
She paused for a few seconds and looked Janet up and down, with a hint of mockery in her eyes.
âOtherwise, youâll be forced to wear only cheap clothes to class reunions.â
