Chapter 555
The Mysterious Billionaire and His Substitute Bride
As Garrett listened to Laney carefully, his eyes grew sharp. He stared at Laney for a long time and then sighed, âYou are really a troublemaker, arenât you?â
Laney had just moved to Barnesâa place where the Burke family held a lot of power. Because they failed to take revenge on Laney today, they were definitely bound to try again.
Laney stretched her arms and sat leisurely in the back seat of the sports car. She closed her eyes and said indifferently, âIâm used to it. Itâs normal in this industry. While I make money protecting others, my life will always be at stake.â
She paused and then cracked one eye open. She glanced at Garrett and coughed awkwardly. âThanks, Mr. Harding.â
âYouâre most welcome. Weâve known each other for a long time now. Weâre friends now, arenât me?â
Garrett smiled, waving his hand nonchalantly.
After mulling over it for a while, Laney figured itâd be better to draw a clear line between them. After all, she didnât like owing others any favors. âIf you need my help, just call me.â
These words made Garrett feel somewhat alienated. He pulled a long face and muttered, âWhy do you have to push me away like that?â
However, Laney suddenly looked serious and she sat bolt upright on alert. She pressed her finger to her lips, gesturing at him to shush.
Garrett felt wronged and opened his mouth to protest, but Laney quickly clamped her hand over his mouth.
âShh. I think someoneâs following us.â Laney looked back as she spoke.
As expected, three black cars were tailing them, just dozens of meters away.
Garrett frowned and followed her gaze. He pried Laneyâs hand off of his mouth and said, âThose guys are really something. They caught up to us so soon.â
âEven though they looked afraid of your family just now, it seems theyâll stop at nothing to get to me.â
Laney narrowed her eyes and sat back in her seat. âYou can drop me off at a crowded place later. Iâll handle this.â
âDo you have a death wish or something? Do you really think Iâll just sit here and watch you get killed?â
Garrett cried indignantly.
Turning to Jarrod, he then barked, âKeep driving.â
He turned to Laney again and said seriously, âYou canât go back to the hotel now. Those people are just waiting for an opportunity to attack you. If they see you alone, theyâll definitely take action.â
Laney thought about it for a moment and then shook her head. âIâll come up with something. I donât want to get you or your family involved in this.â
Suddenly, Garrettâs eyes lit up. âI have an idea. Why donât you hide at my place for a while? They wonât dare to break in.â
Laney pursed her lips hesitantly.
âI wonât get involved. I doubt theyâll dare to offend the Harding family,â Garrett said confidently. Then, his expression darkened. âDonât you get it? You wonât be able to survive out there alone.â
âFine,â Laney finally said.
Soon, the car pulled into Garrettâs mansion.
As soon as Garrett got out of the car, he opened the door and grabbed Laneyâs arm, pulling her into the house.
âI live here alone. Do you want me to show you around?â
âNo, thanks. Just tell me which room Iâll be staying. I can also take the couch if needed,â Laney said flatly.
As she spoke, she headed straight to the closed curtain and peeked through the crack vigilantly.
âTheyâre lurking outside. I doubt theyâll give up. Do you have a gun here?â
