Chapter 109
After the Divorce: Crushed on My Lawyer Ex-wife
#109 âI wonât Bother You Anymore.â
The tension in the air crackled as Sophia crossed her arms, leaning against the doorframe. Alexander stood awkwardly on the other side of the threshold, uncertainty etched across his face. The weight of the unspoken words hung heavily between them.
âLook, Sophia, I need you to understand,â Alexander began.
Sophia raised an eyebrow, feigning indifference. âUnderstand what? That you and Megan were just having a friendly drink and a midnight chat?â Her tone was laced with skepticism, a defense mechanism to mask the turmoil within.
Alexander sighed, the creaking of the door echoing the tension in the room, and he ran a hand through his hair. â Sophia, nothing happened between us. I got drunk, and Megan helped me back here. Thatâs it.â
Sophiaâs eyes narrowed, her walls still firmly in place. âOh, how heartwarming. You and Megan, the best of buddies. But, really, Alexander, you expect me to believe nothing happened? You two disappearing together, and then I find out you spent the night?â
Alexanderâs frustration simmered beneath the surface. He felt the need to convey more than just words; he needed Sophia to see the truth in his eyes. âItâs not like that. You know we have history, and itâs complicated. But last night⦠it was just a mess.â
Sophia, refusing to let her guard down, shrugged nonchalantly. âComplicated history, sure. But hey, itâs none of my business who you sleep with. Friends can do that, right?â
As he searched Sophiaâs eyes for a hint of understanding, Alexanderâs internal thoughts raced. She has to believe me. I canât lose her over something that didnât happen. How did it come to this?
âSophia, itâs not about sleeping with her. I need you to believe me, nothing like that happened.â
Sophiaâs facade wavered for a moment, but she controlled herself. âWhy are you here explaining yourself to me? You are a grown up man Alexander. Do as you please.â She chuckled, a bitter edge to her laughter.
âSo, you donât care? You donât want to know what happened yesterday?â Alexander asked her.
âNo.â
Despite the emotional storm brewing, Sophiaâs indifference cast a shadow over the room, making the situation even more tense.
Alexander, wearing his heart on his sleeve, had assumed that their relationship was finally evolving.
They had navigated the ups and downs, and in his mind, it was time to take things to the next level.
Yet, the indifference radiating from Sophia hit him like a ton of bricks.
Alexander took a deep breath, ready to continue the struggle to bridge the growing gap between them.
âSophia, I thought⦠I thought we were moving forward, you know? After everything weâve been through.â
The subtle play of shadows on Sophiaâs face revealed a flicker of vulnerability before she controlled herself. âMoving forward? Alexander, weâre just here. Where weâve always been. No need to read into things.â
Alexanderâs frustration bubbled to the surface. âNo need to read into things? Sophia, weâve been through a lot, and I thought we were on the same page.â
Sophia, seemingly unfazed, twirled a strand of her hair absentmindedly. â Same page? Look, Alex, itâs not that complicated. Weâre just friends, right? No need to complicate things.â
Alexanderâs eyes reflected a mix of hurt and confusion. âFriends? After everything? I thought we had something more.â
Sophiaâs indifference remained steadfast. âWeâre fine the way we are. No need to make it into a big deal.â
For Alexander, those words were a blow to the gut. It was as if all the efforts, the shared moments, and the hope he had invested in their connection were rendered meaningless. The room echoed with a heavy silence.
But in Alexanderâs eyes, there was a flicker of something more-a realization that the narrative he had crafted in his mind about their relationship didnât align with Sophiaâs perspective. The emotional disconnection widened.
The air between Alexander and Sophia crackled with unspoken tension. Determined to peel away Sophiaâs calm facade, Alexander took a deep breath, ready to drop the bombshell that he hoped would shake her indifference.
âSo, Sophia, you know what Megan proposed to me last night?â Alexander asked, his tone full with frustration.
Sophia, with an air of studied nonchalance, looked up from her phone. âOh, do enlighten me,â she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. Her eyes met his, revealing nothing but a poker face.
Feeling a twinge of irritation, Alexander continued, âMegan proposed a marriage contract. Can you believe that?â
Sophiaâs response was far from what he expected. She shrugged, a dismissive gesture that caught him off guard.â Why are you telling me this? Itâs none of my business, Alexander.â
Her indifference stung more than he cared to admit. âNone of your business? Sophia, this involves you too. Megan wants us to announce our engagement.
Sophiaâs lips curled into a sardonic smile. âWell, if Megan wants you to wear a pink tutu and dance the cha- cha, would that be my business too?â
Alexanderâs frustration simmered beneath the surface. âSophia, this is serious. Megan thinks itâs a good deal for both of us.â
Sophia crossed her arms, a picture of indifference. âGood deal? Youâre a grown man, Alexander. Make your own decisions. I couldnât care less about your deals with Megan.â
Her coldness struck a nerve. Alexander, desperate to elicit any emotional response, pushed further.
âDonât you have anything to say about it? Doesnât it bother you?â
Sophia met his gaze with a cool detachment. âBother me? Why would it? If you want to marry Megan, go ahead. Itâs your life.â
The words landed like a punch to the gut, but Alexander refused to back down. âYouâre lying, Sophia. I know you better than that. Thereâs got to be something.â
She smiled. âYou donât know me, Alexander. And frankly, I donât know why youâre bothering me with your Megan drama.â
Alexander, feeling a surge of frustration and hurt, took a step back.â Fine, Sophia. I get it. I wonât bother you anymore.â
As he angrily left her doorstep, slamming the door behind him, Sophiaâs calm exterior finally cracked.
She sank onto the couch, a mixture of emotions swirling within her. Unbeknownst to Alexander, her indifferent facade had been a shield against the storm of conflicting feelings.
Meanwhile, Alexander, fueled by a sense of desperation, pulled out his phone and dialed Meganâs number. âI accept your offer,â he said, the weight of his decision settling in his chest.
On the other end of the line, Meganâs voice carried triumph and satisfaction. âSmart choice, Alexander.
Weâre going to be a power couple, taking control of Horizon Media Holdings. Just imagine the possibilities.â
Despite the gravity of his decision, a sense of emptiness lingered within Alexander. The victory Megan painted felt hollow, and the image of Sophiaâs cold indifference haunted him.
