Chapter 178
After the Divorce: Crushed on My Lawyer Ex-wife
#177 âI canât Bear to Lose You.â
Sophiaâs brow furrowed as she listened to Benjaminâs concerns, but her determination remained unwavering. â Ben, I understand your worries, but we canât just ignore this. Thereâs something here, something important that we need to uncover.â
Benjaminâs frustration boiled over, his voice rising in agitation. âBut Sophia, youâre putting yourself in harmâs way! We donât know what kind of people weâre dealing with here. Itâs not worth risking your safety over.â
Sophia shook her head, her eyes flashing with resolve. âI canât just turn a blind eye to this, Ben. My grandfather was a good man, and there must be a reason behind his actions. I need to know the truth, no matter the cost.â
Benjamin clenched his fists in frustration, his anger bubbling to the surface. âYouâre being reckless, Sophia! Youâre putting yourself in danger, and for what? To satisfy your curiosity?â
Sophiaâs voice softened, but her resolve remained unyielding. âI need to do this, Ben. Please try to understand.â
But Benjamin was beyond reasoning, his fear and frustration clouding his judgment. âI canât watch you throw your life away like this, Sophia.â
Tension hung heavy in the air as the two stared at each other, the weight of their conflicting emotions threatening to tear them apart. But Sophia knew that she couldnât back down, not when the truth was within her grasp.
Benjamin sat down next to Sophia, his heart heavy with concern, and reached out to grab her hand for reassurance. However, Sophia immediately pulled away, her actions stinging him with hurt.
âSophia, drop that,â Benjamin urged, his tone filled with worry. âHow many dangers has he been getting into recently because of these secrets? Look what happened to your father.â
âDonât talk about my father,â Sophia snapped, her voice rising with indignation.
âDonât do that, Sophie,â Benjamin pleaded, hurt evident in his eyes. Come with me to Europe.â
âIn Europe?â Sophia scoffed, her disbelief evident in her tone.
âYes, leave all the fuss and run away with me to Europe. Youâll be safe there. You can open a new law firm andâ¦â
âIâm not going to Europe, have you lost your mind?â
âPlease listen to me,â Benjamin begged, his voice tinged with desperation. âYou donât have to play detective. Leave all this and come with me to live peacefully. Weâve known each other for years, Sophia, and I canât bear it if something happens to you.â
âIâm perfectly capable of managing on my own. Besides, Evelyn and Alexander are here,â Sophia countered firmly.
âDonât start with Alexander. Heâs been neglecting you for years. How can you be with a man like that?â
Benjaminâs frustration spilled over, his words laced with bitterness.
âAnd what kind of man is he, Benjamin?
âHeâs a dishonest businessman who only tricks you. I canât believe youâre buying into his hypocrisy. Iâm sure heâs aware of these deals and heâs just blindfolding you.â
âThatâs not true at all.â
âCanât you see how much trouble youâve gotten yourself into since he is in your life?â Benjamin implored, his concern evident in every word.
âHeâs not to blame for any of this. Heâs always been there to help me when things got tough.â
âThings wouldnât be so hard if it wasnât for him. How are you so blind to see that?â
Sophia shook her head, frustration etched into her features. âYouâre wrong, Benjamin. Alexander isnât responsible for the troubles in my life. Heâs been my rock, my support through it all.â
Benjaminâs brows furrowed, his frustration mounting. âBut canât you see, Sophia? Heâs a part of this mess, whether you want to admit it or not.
And now youâre putting yourself in danger by digging into these secrets.â
âI canât just turn a blind eye, Benjamin, âSophia insisted, her voice firm with determination. âThereâs something bigger at play here, something my grandfather was involved in, and I need to know the truth.â
âBut at what cost?â Benjamin pressed, his tone pleading. âYou could be risking your life, Sophia. Is it worth it?â
Sophia hesitated, her gaze dropping to the documents spread out on the table before her. The weight of Benjaminâs words bore down on her, but so too did her unwavering resolve to uncover the truth.
âI have to do this, Benjamin,â she said finally, her voice resolute. âFor my father, for my grandfather, and for myself. I canât run away from the truth, no matter how dangerous it may be.â
Benjaminâs pacing grew more frantic, his steps echoing loudly in the tense silence of the room. His hands clenched and unclenched at his sides, his expression wrought with a mixture of anxiety and determination.
âSophia,â he began, his voice strained, âI canât just walk away from this. Iâll sit here until you decide to come with me to Europe.â
Sophia watched him with a mixture of shock and concern, her brow furrowed in confusion. âBenjamin, what are you saying?â she asked, her voice tinged with apprehension. âWhy are you behaving like this?â
âBecause I love you, Sophia,â Benjamin blurted out, his words tumbling forth in a rush. âI canât stand the thought of something happening to you. I canât bear to lose you.â
