Savage Little Games: Chapter 32
Savage Little Games: A Dark Mafia, Enemies to Lovers Romance (Sin City Mafia Book 1)
After a long, crazy day, Iâve just changed into one of Danteâs tees when thereâs a rapid knock on the door.
âIâll get it,â he says from the bathroom where heâs still changing.
âItâs fine. Everything is covered,â I say, just before I hear the beep of the safe opening, followed by his shout of various swears.
âWhatâs wrong?â I ask going to him because whoever is at the door can wait. Heâs patting his hand around inside the wall safe frantically.
âSon of a motherfucking bitch!â
âWhat is it, Dante?â I demand when he continues to ignore me and thereâs more banging on the bedroom door. One problem at a time.
âAll my goddamn cash is gone,â he says. âAnd my other Glock with the clips and bullets!â
I see my gun lying on a shelf, which is a relief. At least for me.
Turning to face me finally, Danteâs eyes are the cold blue I hate when he says, âDid you do this? Is this some kind of joke?â
I huff out a laugh. The sound slowly fades away before I realize heâs serious. âYouâre accusing me of robbing you? Seriously? How stupid would I have to be to rob you and keep sleeping beside you, Dante?â
âYou and I were in here all day. No cleaners came and went today.â
âIt wasnât me.â When Dante doesnât respond, I remind him, âI donât know your damn code, genius!â
The silence between us stretches as he considers my response until itâs interrupted by more pounding on the door.
âGod-fucking-dammit,â he growls before slipping past me to go answer the door in just his boxer briefs.
âWhat?â I hear him snap at whoever is on the other side as I return to the bedroom.
âMr. Salvato, Iâmâ¦I donât know how to tell you this. Iâm so sorryâ¦â a manâs deep voice trails off.
âWhat the fuck is going on?â Dante demands. âSpit it out!â When they still wonât speak, he asks, âIs this about who fucking robbed me today?â
Ah, it must have been a guard. Or Eli. Right? Who else couldâve snuck into our room while we were having dinner?
âRobâ¦robbed you?â a second man asks, his voice higher pitched.
âMy safe was emptied out today. Are you telling me you two are responsible?â
âNo. No, sir. Thatâs notâ¦I didnâtâ¦we didnât rob you,â I hear one respond. âWe were downstairs in the kitchen with Madison.â
âMadison? What about her?â Dante asks, keeping a white-knuckled grip on the door.
âShe left.â
â
?â he roars. âWhat do you mean she ?â
âShe slipped out the back door to the kitchen. By the time we noticed she was goneâ¦there was no sign of her.â
Thereâs a long, drawn-out moment of silence before Dante erupts. âWhat the fuck are you doing up here? Go find her!â he shouts at them before slamming the door in their faces.
âWeâll find her,â I assure him. âIâll-Iâll get dressed and go downstairs with you to search,â I tell him when he goes to the dresser, jerking open a drawer to pull clothes out.
âNo,â he says while shoving his legs into jogging pants, then slips a tee over his head. âYou go talk to Cass and Sophie, see if they know anything about this, where Madison may be going.â
âOkay,â I agree.
Spinning in a circle, he mutters, âI need my phone. Where the fuck is my phone?â
I glance around searching for it, but donât see it either. âIs it in the closet where you were changing?â
âFuck,â he says before he jogs through the bathroom to go look. He comes out with it in his hand before Iâve had a chance to move. âIt was Madison,â he says when he stops in front of me, his face losing all of its color.
âWhatâ¦â
âShe raided the safe. She took the cash, the gunâ¦I shouldâve known. The code was her birthday.â
âOh, wow. Iâm so sorry,â I tell him softly. He doesnât seem to hear the words as his mind keeps churning everything over.
âWhy would she need a gun, Vanessa?â
âI-I donât know,â I say. But I do know. He does too. If sheâs on her own, sheâll need it for protection.
âShe wouldnât hurt herself.â
âNo, she wouldnât,â I agree when his mind goes to that dark place. âShe wouldnât need the money ifâ¦thatâs not why she took the gun.â
âMadison planned this out, leaving, running. Did sheâ¦did she say anything to you? Is this why she wanted to work down in the kitchen? I never shouldâve let herâ¦Wait,â he says, turning to me with his brow furrowed. âWhy the fuck donât you look more surprised?â
âWhat?â I mutter as I lower myself into the edge of the bed, feeling a huge argument coming on, one that blows the earlier one out of the water.
âVanessa, did Madison say something to you?â Dante demands as he kneels in front of me to stare me in the face.
âMaybe.â
âMaybe?â he repeats. âWhat the fuck did she say?â
âWe were just talking the other day, and she mentioned wanting to go to college, that you wouldnât let her.â
âSo? I told her she can take whatever classes she wants online.â
âI know, but she wanted to leave, to live on campus like a normal kid.â Chewing on my thumbnail, I deliver the worst part. âAnd I, um, I may have mentioned that using a different name to hide who she was, might help keep her safe.â
âYou did what?â he growls, his blue eyes turning furious.
âI told her it would only work with your help, that legitimate looking documents like that are expensive. Not to mention the SAT scores and transcripts. I didnât think she would try to do it on her own!â
âAnd how the fuck would you know about those things, Vanessa?â
âBecauseâ¦because I tried using cheap fake IDs for stupid shit like buying beer and cigarettes when I was young and rebellious. They didnât fool anyone,â I explain in a rush. âLook, Dante, Iâm sorry Madison left without telling you but leaving was her decision. Itâs what she wantedâ¦â
Straightening to his full height, Dante towers over me and erupts. âYou shouldâve minded your own goddamn business! If anything happens to herâ¦â He spears his fingers through the front of his hair and turns away from me with a growl. âIs this why youâve been showing her how to cook and shit, so, she could sneak off and try to make it on her own? Because she canât!â
âYes, she can,â I argue when I get to my feet. âYou may not want her to be out in the world alone, but she will be okay, Dante.â
âShut up. Just shut the fuck up!â he bellows as he heads for the door. âStay away from my daughters, and stay the hell away from me.â
