Chapter 162
The Beta’s Regret
Chapter 162
[Eroâs POV]
I could see the shock on her face as I broke the news of her friendâs death to her.
She stumbled onto the bed, and stared at me in disbelief. I knew this would be hard for her to take in, but seeing her react like this, it hurts more than I expected.
I wished I could shield her from the hurt and the pain, but she had to know, and it was better the information came from me.
âNo, no,â she whispered, her voice shaking with fear. âEros, please tell me youâre joking. Eros. Please⦠This canât be real.â
I shook my head, and looked away, I couldnât look her in the eye, I felt like I failed her. âIâm really sorry, Love,â I said quietly.
She let out a loud, and painful cry, as she started to weep. I reached out to comfort her, but I didnât know if my touch would help heal her broken heart. I didnât know what to do and just stood watching her.
After seeing her cry for a while, I couldnât take it anymore. I pulled her close to me, and held her in my arms. I was relieved when she sank into the embrace.
She pulled away and looked up at me, her eyes were red, and her face was wet from crying. âWhat happened, Eros? How did she die? Tell me everything,â she asked, her voice cracking.
I took a deep breath, trying to gather my thoughts. âYou remember three months ago you were summoned to a council meeting at Alpha Theoâs house.â
She nodded. âI remember that you and I, and our friends; Beauty, Arthur and Adonis went together.â she said.
âYes, and Alpha Theo and Elder Vincenzo gave you two choices. To become Theoâs mistress or face a punishment.â
She nodded again.
âRemember that Luna Lyra, Theoâs wife, was furious? She confessed to Theo neglecting her and always planning of ways to get you back. Then she threatened that none of us would leave that meeting alive,â I muttered, fisting my hands âThe doors were locked, but soon enough, Alice and Tom walked into the meeting room.â
Eden nodded âI think that was where everything became foggy. I donât remember anything that happened after Alice and Tom walked in.â
I held her tightly into my bossom âOkay, let me fill you in. Lyra didnât stop there with her threats. She started insulting you and said so many terrible things to you⦠and I lost itâ My jaw at the memory.
Pictures flashed, and I was relieving the moment again. Something in me had snapped, and I couldnât watch Lyra insult my mate anymore.
I sped towards Lyra and grabbed her by the neck, digging my claws into her. She let out a muffled cry.
âEros, let her go!â Aliceâs voice cut through the room, and I barely had time to react as she already had Eden in her hostage. She was holding a syringe to my mateâs throat.
Edenâs face was full of shock as she couldnât believe why her friend had turned on her. The syringeâs needle was close to my mateâs throat.
âEros,â Alice repeated again, her voice threatening, âlet Lyra go, or Iâll hurt Eden.â
I froze, not believing what I was seeing. Alice was Edenâs friend, at least that was what we all thought. I didnât think she could actually go through with the threat.
But when I saw the determination in her eyes, and a chill run down my spine. I knew she was determined to kill Eden if I didnât comply.
âYou all shouldnât stare at me like youâve seen a ghost.â Alice yelled at Arthur, Beauty and Adonis âAnd so fâucking what, I even had lunch with you guys at school- and it was because you thought I was friends with her, but not anymore!â she chuckled, tightening her grip on Eden.
I didnât know if it was the betrayal or shock that still rooted Eden in place. Then Alice leaned into my mateâs cars and spat venomously âI hate you, Eden. You have everything, a perfect mate, loyal friends⦠while I have nothing. Why must you have it all, you bitch?â she yelled before raising the syringe subtly for us to see the dark strange liquid.
She smirked. âDo you know what this is? Itâs Wolfsbane mixed with vampire blood. Tomâs little invention. Just one jab, and youâre done.â she announced with a sly grin.
My heart pounded in my chest, the combination of woltbane and vampire blood was fatal to any supernatural creature.
Alice wasnât blutting at all and so I released my grip on Lyra and threw her to the side. âAlice, please let her go⦠Please.â I pleaded, trying to keep my voice steady,
But Alice tightened her hold on Eden and grinned wickedly. âToo late, Erosâ she whispered, and in one swift move, she stabbed Eden with the syringe.
She plunged the syringe into your neck, and you instantly went limp.â I said, coming back from my reverie as I clasped my palms over my face.
âI rushed to catch you, and thought you had died. My beast instantly went livid, and began killing everyone. Alice was our first target but she escaped. She and Lyra escaped mysteriously, and I was slowly losing myself to the beast when Beauty, and Adonis brought your body to me. They managed to convince me that you were still breathingâ¦â¦..
Truly, if they hadnât, the entire realm wouldâve been in ruins. Hybrids donât do well without their mates.â I said sadly, and Eden climbed onto my laps to console me because the thought of losing her was starting to get me enraged again.
She caressed my cheek, and I continued âWe took you to the hospital, and got you started on treatments. It was afterwards Adonis and Arthur told me that theyâd captured Tom. I asked to see him, and that was when I entered into the dark room where he was being tortured⦠he was just then being beaten and bleeding, barechested and pale⦠My beast wanted his head but I was restrained by Adonis.â I breathed harshly, and Eden clasped her palms over mine to soothe me.
I stared at my mate âYou wonât believe what the sick man said, when I was leaving the room- because I couldnât stay another minute and not kill him.â
âWhat did he say?â she asked
Tom had let out a sinister laughter âYou think your mateâs suffering ends here? Tell her that her friend, Nova, is dead.â
