Chapter 198
The Beta’s Regret
Chapter 198
(Edenâs Pov)
A curse.
Lord Shevek did all these because of a curse?
âHow are you sure the curse is real? What if it isnât? Maybe Kaliyah didnât really cast a spell, or maybe the spell didnât work. What if there is no curse after all?â I frowned.
It was possible that there was nothing to be scared of. There was no way we could confirm if his curse was real except Eros ascends the throne.
But I had a feeling what Lord Shevek had said was real. Maybe the visions I had were not a coincidence. Maybe this was exactly what the moon goddess tried to tell me. The Evil Eros in the other realm.
âItâs real Eden.â Lord Shevek started. âI donât doubt it. Kaliyah was not an average witch. She was from a lineage of powerful witches that were meant to serve the king. Her family had practiced sorcery for centuries.â

âHow did you know that? Did she tell you?â I asked
âI saw it myself. I knew what I saw. When Kaliyah casted those spells, she transformed into something different, the language she used was ancient. It was real enough. I have only heard about them until that moment.â
âI still find it hard to believe.â I said.
He chuckled. âKaliyah had suffered too much. Lyraea was hard on her. She would burn Kaliyahâs skin just for fun, which made her bear scars all over her skin that were.terrible to see.â
âWhen we escaped, I offered her a home here in the coven. She swore to serve me as her master, as she can be nothing more than a slave.â
âA slave?â I was confused.
âYes. The curse was the first request I had made to the moon goddess in her presence, and she was bound to make sure it came to pass as long as she served me.â
âIs that why you think the curse is real?â I raised a brow. That was hardly enough reason.
âI also refused to believe what I saw, until Kaliyah fortified me before I killed Lyraea.â Lord Shevek responded.
âWhat do you mean?â I asked.
âThe royal kingdom was not a place I could easily go in and attack and come back unscathed. But for me, it was quite easy because no one saw me.â Lord Shevek answered. âIt was unheard of. I passed between guards and they didnât notice. That wasnât natural.â
I frowned. âIf Kaliyah was such a powerful witch, why did she keep her powers hidden for years and never use them? She could have used her powers elsewhere instead of working as a slave in the palace and as your slave.â
Lord Shevek shrugged. âShe was under a curse too. When her ancestors had rebeled against the kingâs authority in the past, they were chained down with a Khthonix.â
The story only got stranger.
âWhat is that?â I asked.

âKhthonix is a powerful magic necklace that can bind even the most powerful witch in the realm. It was made centuries ago with the blood of a Highborn witch, the king of werewolves and vampires, and twelve noblemen from the vampire and werewolf territory.â
âIt is a powerful tool that was used to trap the powers of the special witches and force them to remain obedient to the king in the past.â
âAnd so for generations, Kaliyahâs ancestors had served the royal house as slaves. Anyone who rebelled died. Kaliyah couldnât escape it. I couldnât bear seeing her serve me as a slave, so I made her a noble. That was a terrible mistake. She died at childbirth.â
That sounded like a very horrible thing to happen to a person. I couldnât imagine how Kaliyah must have felt knowing she would never escape a curseâ¦
âSo what about her daughter, Lamia?â My mind flashed back to the little girl I had seen earlier. She doesnât deserve to be under a curse; such a sweet soul.
âI didnât see any necklace on her.â The girlâs neck had been bare with no accessories that seemed unusual.
Lord Shevek sighed. âItâs not something you can see. Itâs already a part of the blood. She is bound by the same curse. Nothing can save her. The only thing that can destroy the Khthonix is a ritual by the chosen one.â
I shivered. This was something.
âWhat do you mean by the chosen one?â I asked.
It was sad that Lamiaâs life was already determined by all of this just like her motherâs was. It was also a terrible thing that Eros was cursed by Lord Shevek.
My own Father.
Lord Shevek looked away as he answered my question. âI donât know myself. That was what Kaliyah told me before her death. She asked me to find the chosen one and save her daughter.â
âI went round looking for the chosen one, but I never found anyone like that. Lamia works in the house as a slave. I couldnât adopt her because the curse would take effect, and the council was against adopting a cursed witch, but I have kept a close eye on her while I search for the chosen one.â
âThe chosen one.â I whispered. My eyes widened. âCan the chosen one lift the curse from Eros?â
Lord Shevek nodded his head. âWhen Kaliyah sealed the curse with her powers, she said the only thing that can save King Dimitrois lineage from the curse, lies in my lineage and Kaliyahâs lineage. But the key is the blood of the chosen one.â
I felt lightheaded.
Everything Lord Shevek had said felt too much for me to handle at once, starting from the brothers revelation to the curse.
My knees went weak, and I staggered a little.
âEden!â Beauty gasped as she caught me in time before I could fall. âAre you okay?â
âIâm fine.â I tried to push her away, but she held me tightly.
Lord Shevek rushed to my side, his brows furrowed in concern.
Are you sure you are fine? You donât look good. Your face has gone pale.â
All at once, I was asked a lot of questions, if I needed to rest or to sit.
My head buzzed.

I wanted to respond, but I couldnât. The words stuck in my throat, and everything began to spin. I mumbled incoherently, and before I knew it, I lost strength and everything went black.
The last thing I heard was Beautyâs voice as she called my name
