Chapter 140
Between Ruin And Resolve: My Ex-Husband’s Regret
Chapter 140:
Picking up her packed belongings, Sadie left the office for the last time. Behind her, Vivi watched, her face flushed with frustration, yet she was powerless in the face of Sadieâs dignified exit.
The next day, Sadie double-checked her suitcase, zipping it up, ready for her next chapter. Averi sat on the sofa, clutching his teddy bear, his eyes wide with curiosity.
Sadie ruffled his hair gently. âAveri, are you ready? Weâre about to leave.â
âIâm ready, Mommy!â Averi said, jumping off the sofa, his teddy bear bouncing along. They walked to the door, which rang just then.
Sadie opened it to find Alex. âAlex? What are you doing here? Werenât you supposed to be back in the country?â
Stepping in, Alex took Sadieâs suitcase. âI came to pick you up,â he said. He ruffled Averiâs hair. âHey Averi, have you missed me?â
Averi hid shyly behind Sadie, peeking out to murmur, âHello, Alex.â Moved by Alexâs gesture, Sadie felt a warm glow.
They headed to the black car parked outside. Alex loaded the luggage and held the door open for them.
On the road, Averi asked, âMommy, where are we going?â
Sadie looked into Averiâs innocent eyes and smiled gently. âWeâre going to see Mommyâs beloved grandma,â Sadie replied softly.
âWhatâs she like?â Averi asked, his eyes sparkling.
âSheâs kind-hearted and gentle. Sheâll tell you stories and play games with you,â Sadie explained, her voice tender.
âWow, she must be wonderful!â Averi clapped excitedly.
Alex, watching Averiâs joy in the rearview mirror, smiled. âWeâre on our way,â he said. âHer health has improved, and she was discharged yesterday. A caregiver is there, so donât worry.â

Relief swept through Sadie as she absorbed the news.
âThank goodness,â she whispered, a mix of emotions stirring inside her.
Three years had passed, and she was finally returning to that familiar place, to see the person she had missed every day and night. With her eyes shut, she inhaled deeply, trying to steady her racing heart.
As the plane touched down, the darkness enveloped Jazmah. Averi, sleepy, rested his head on Sadieâs shoulder.
âMommy, have we arrived?â he asked in his sweet voice.
Sadie kissed his forehead gently. âYes, darling, weâre here.â
Alex parked his car outside the faculty housing where Laura resided. He took out the luggage from the trunk and opened the car door. Sadie, with Averi in her arms, got out of the car. Her shadow, long and slender, stretched under the dim streetlight.
Alex pressed the doorbell. The door soon opened to show a middle-aged woman, Lauraâs caregiver.
âMr. Howe, welcome,â she said with respect.
Acknowledging her with a nod of his own, Alex turned to Sadie. âLetâs head inside.â
Taking a deep breath and clutching Averiâs hand, Sadie stepped through the door.
Lauraâs room, though small, was meticulously kept. There, Laura rested on her bed, looking notably pale. Tears filled her eyes as Sadie came into view.
âSadie, my dear, itâs been so long,â she said with a trembling voice, reaching out to clasp Sadieâs hand firmly.
Sadieâs cheeks were streaked with tears.
âGrandmaâ¦â she managed to say, her voice breaking with emotion. It had been three years since she had last seen her beloved family member.
