Chapter 222
Between Ruin And Resolve: My Ex-Husband’s Regret
Chapter 222:
Suddenly, Jim hurried toward her, his face marked by urgency.
âSadie, thereâs a complication. Thereâs something you need to hear.â
Dread filled Sadieâs heart. âWhatâs happened, Dr. Archer?â
Jim paused, evidently searching for the right way to break the news. âThe donor⦠has backed out.â
âThey what?â Disbelief clouded Sadieâs face as her voice climbed in pitch.
Her ears began to ring, and her surroundings seemed to blur.
Why now?
They had been so close to moving forward. What made the donor reconsider at the last minute?
Sadieâs face lost all color, her lips quivering, but she found herself speechless.
Averi, sensing her unease, looked up with concern. âWhatâs wrong, Mommy?â
Holding back tears, Sadie smiled weakly. âOh, itâs just a little hiccup, honey. Mommy will fix it.â
She led Jim out into the hallway to speak privately, away from Averiâs prying ears.
âSadie, I assure you, weâre scrambling to find another donor,â Jim said, trying to soothe her.
Sadie was desperate and asked, âCould I possibly contact the donor myself? Maybe I could change their mind. We donât have much time.â
Jimâs face showed sympathy, but he hesitated. âIâm truly sorry, Sadie. I canât reveal that information. Itâs against our policy.â
Feeling her legs weaken, Sadie nearly stumbled.
She expressed her gratitude to Jim, holding onto her composure.

After steadying herself, she returned to Averiâs room.
âMommy, you look sad,â Averi said, his voice full of worry.
Forcing another smile, Sadie stroked his hair tenderly. âIâm just a bit worn out, my love. Donât worry.â
Darkness had enveloped the city, and Averiâs fever had spiked once more. His cheeks radiated a feverish glow, while his small hands gripped Sadieâs shirt tightly.
âMom⦠Pizzaâ¦â
Each word from Averi tugged at Sadieâs heartstrings, filling her with a turbulent mix of worry and fear that clouded her thoughts. She caressed Averiâs hot forehead gently, her voice a calm whisper.
âHang in there, Averi. Mommyâs going to get it for you right now.â
Near the hospital was a pizzeria, and Sadie made her way there swiftly. She bought Averiâs favorite pizza and hurried back, moving quickly and with purpose.
As she rounded a corner by the hospitalâs back garden, she overheard a conversation.
Kyla and Jordyn were talking nearby.
Sadie instinctively took cover behind a tree blooming with fragrant flowers.
âThatâs a brilliant plan, Kyla! Sadieâs child wonât last much longer,â Jordyn remarked, her voice dripping with vile satisfaction.
Kyla responded sharply, âEnough! Just take the money and keep quiet.â
Peering through the treeâs leaves, Sadie watched as Kyla handed over a thick envelope of cash to Jordyn.
A gleeful smile spread across Jordynâs face as she took the envelope, nodding repeatedly. âYou can trust me, Kyla. I wonât say a word.â
Sadie pressed her hand to her mouth, muffling any inadvertent noises. A cold shiver ran through her as she realized the gravity of their conversation. She knew she had to get to the bottom of it.
