Chapter 1883
Mr. Kane Got Blacklisted
Keegan nodded. âThe hairpin does look good.â
Stella was at a loss for words.
âJaylene was clearly asking if she looked good and not the hair accessory.â Jaylene, however, did not mind at all. In fact, she seemed delighted.
âJaylene, did the police contact you recently?â Keegan casually inquired.
Still immersed in the joy of Keegan giving her a gift for the very first time, Jaylene instinctively replied, âNo. Why?â
âItâs nothing,â Keegan replied casually. âA few days ago, they came to ask me about the day of the incident. They asked me how I was rescued. I still donât have any memories of it, so I canât provide the police with useful clues. You found me alone that day, right?â
Jayleneâs fingers suddenly tightened. Without lifting her head, she replied, âI heard from the police that you were in the area, so I took a cab there. When I found you, you were already on the shore. So, I had the driver help me get you into the car.â
âYou got the information from the police?â Keegan paused.â I thought you went with Marshall. The police came because they received a call from Marshall. I thought you were with him.â
Jaylene was taken aback, and her expression was somewhat bewildered. Then, she shook her head.
âNo.â
Keegan remained silent, as he contemplated something.
Stella curled her fingers, and her chest was trembling slightly.
âKeegan is probing Jaylene. He doesnât trust her as much as he claimed. But, why did he say those things to me?â Jaylene seemed unaware of Keeganâs probing and thought that he blamed her for not informing the Kane family.
With teary eyes, she spoke softly, âKeegan, you were severely injured at the time. When I took you to the hospital, the doctor said it was very likely that you wouldnât survive. I was so scared. I didnât know how to tell everyone. By the time you were transferred out of the ICU, it was already two weeks later, and you didnât remember anything. I didnât dare to say anything.â
She paused for a while and said, âKeegan, you wonât blame me, will you?â
Keegan just looked at her and remained silent.
Jaylene panicked and continued, âKeegan, Iâm sorry.â
At the same time, Stella heard the sound of wind chimes coming from Jaylene.
Keeganâs initially calm gaze suddenly seemed dazed, and then it softened.
He reached out to wipe away Jayleneâs tears, but Stellaâs cold voice came from behind before his hand made contact. âWhat are you two doing?â
Her voice startled Jaylene.
Keeganâs movements paused for a moment. He picked up a towel nearby and hastily wiped Jayleneâs face. âI donât blame you,â he said softly.
Initially frightened by Stellaâs sudden appearance, Jaylene felt a touch of pride when Keegan wiped away her tears.
âStella, donât misunderstand. I just got some dust in my eyes, and Keegan was helping me get it out.â
Keegan stood at the side with an expressionless face, and he did not offer any explanation.
Stella let out a sarcastic chuckle. âHah. This is the first time Iâve seen someone wipe away dust from their eyes with a towel.â
Jaylene smirked and said, âIt was just a quick wipe. Youâre not petty, are you?â
Stella looked at Jayleneâs smudged makeup, gave her a cold glance, and said, âYou should take a good look at yourself in the mirror.â With that, she turned around and left. 3 Jaylene was somewhat surprised. She did not expect Stella to let it go so easily.
She intended to say something to Keegan, but he had already walked away.
Jaylene did not care about anything else and hurriedly followed behind.
Keegan arrived in the living room and saw that Stella had already sat down next to Marshall. She smiled at him and said, Donât complain if the food isnât good.
Itâs New Yearâs, and I want to hear something nice.â
Marshall tasted the soup and chuckled, âThis is the most delicious chicken noodle soup Iâve ever had.
Thank you.â
Stella smiled, and her eyes were shining. âYouâre the first person to praise my cooking. When I first learned to cook, someone told me that even dogs wouldnât eat my food.â
