Chapter 27
Mr. Kane Got Blacklisted
Aurora gritted her teeth and said, âHow would you know if heâd like me or not? His parents like me! You just donât want to help your sister out!â
Keegan nodded, âThen, go look for him yourself.â
Aurora was stunned for a moment. âWould I be here begging you to contact Marshall if I could do it myself?â Marshall seemed to have deliberately avoided Aurora since he returned to the country.
Whenever she found out where he was, he would be nowhere in sight when she arrived. He also never picked up when Aurora called.
âPlease, Keegan. Help me out here. Donât you want me to be happily married in the future?â Keegan glanced at her and said, âYou two are not suitable for each other. Heâs seven years older than you.â
âStella was the same age as me when you married her. Why didnât you think she was too young? Why do you men have such double standards?â Keegan was reminded of what Stella did when Aurora mentioned her name. Initially, he had a headache from quarreling with Aurora, but now his tummy was aching too. He tossed the phone to Aurora and said, âGet out of here after you finish.â
Aurora grabbed the phone with joy and immediately called Marshall. âHello?â Marshallâs gentle voice sounded as he picked up the phone. âMarshall, where are you? Why arenât you answering my texts or calls?
It was Marshallâs turn to have a headache. âNot only did Keegan ignore what I said, but he even lent his phone to his sister?!â
âI probably missed them. Iâve been busy. Whatâs up?â
âNothing much⦠Itâs just⦠Can you take me to the charity event this weekend? I didnât get an invitation.â âYour brother has an invitation. You can ask him to take you there,â Marshall politely declined. âHe already has a date,â Aurora said as Keegan glanced at her contemptuously. Marshall did not believe her. With Keeganâs status, it would not be a big deal for him to bring an extra guest to the charity event. Marshall knew what she was thinking. He knew that if he did not state his feelings clearly, Aurora would believe that sheâd still have a chance. âSorry, Aurora, I canât take you to the event. I already have a girlfriend.â Aurora froze. âAre you lying to me on purpose? Thatâs impossible! You just returned to the country. Your mom hasnât even had the time to set up a blind date for you. How could you already have a girlfriend? Stop bluffing!â
Marshall felt a little frustrated. âYouâll see when the day comes. Anyway, I have matters to attend to.
Bye.â He hung up before Aurora could reply. âWhere are you heading to? Iâll drive you there,â he then said to Stella.
âItâs okay. Iâve already called an Uber. Itâll be here soon,â Stella quickly shut down his offer. âItâs rush hour. I happen to be going to the city for some business. I can drop you off on the way. Trust me. Itâs no big deal.â Stella thought it would be ignorant to reject him after what he said, so she replied, âAlright, Bambusa Street, please.â
Marshall occasionally talked to her but knew to avoid crossing the line. For example, he did not act overly concerned about what happened at the police station, nor did he ask her why she was at the hospital the last time they met. Instead, he focused on other lightâhearted details like where she got her unique phone charm. After learning that she made it herself, Marshallâs gaze showed shock and admiration.
The conversation made Stella feel comfortable. For a moment, she imagined that if Keegan were the one next to her, he would have glanced at her in disdain and said, âItâs so ugly.â
âThe day he praises me is the day pigs fly,â she thought. Keegan did not love her, so he never knew how to appreciate her.
