Chapter 152
Too Late, Mr. Billionaire: You can’t afford me now
Chapter 152:
âHadley!â
Looking up, Hadleyâs smile blossomed. âOh, itâs you!â
Eric squinted at the newcomerâa slender, average-looking guy who rolled in on a bike. Hadley was smiling at him? Did she know this guy? What was their story?
The guy, shaken by Ericâs commanding presence, swallowed hard and set the bag back on the ground.
âAnd that too,â Eric added, nodding toward the flour sack still resting on the guyâs shoulder. âPut it down.â
âAlright,â the grocery store owner responded with a quick nod, not sparing another thought.
Meanwhile, Hadley stood frozen, completely thrown off by what had just happened.
Eric turned to her abruptly, his gaze sharp and impatient. âWhy are you just standing there? Pay for the flour already!â
âHuh? Ohâokay,â Hadley stammered, fumbling to find her wallet. âJust a second.â
Ericâs gaze darkened as he noticed the store owner sneaking glances at Hadley. Was she really this oblivious? How could she not pick up on it? Wasnât it obvious to her what was going on?
âWhatâs taking so long?â His voice cut through the moment, growing harsher. Something as simple as finding her wallet shouldnât be taking this long.
âThere,â Hadley said, handing over the cash. âAll set.â
âNo, itâs nothingâ¦â The ownerâs gaze flickered toward Eric, hesitation marking his words. âHadley, he, uh, he isâ¦â
âShouldnât you be on your way?â Eric interjected, his cold, piercing stare cutting through the tension like a blade.
The owner tensed, his resolve crumbling in an instant. He knew better than to press further. âAh, well⦠Hadley, Iâll get going thenâ¦â
âAlright, take care.â Hadley gave him an awkward little wave.

âWhat are you staring at?â
Ericâs patience snapped, his voice edged with irritation. What was so fascinating? And that lollipop in Hadleyâs mouth had been driving him up the wall.
Before she could react, Eric reached over, plucked it from her lips, andâ¦
He tossed it straight into the roadside gutter.
Hadley stared at him, stunned. âWhat is wrong with you?â
âWhy are you yelling?â
Eric had reached his limit. Some random man handed her candy, and she just ate it without a second thought? Now that it was gone, at least he felt a sense of relief.
His eyes locked onto Hadleyâs. âCheap candy. I bet it tastes just as cheap. Youâre not allowed to eat stuff like that.â
What? Hadley couldnât find the words to respond. Did she ever ask him to try it? And what did the taste of the candy have to do with him?
Watching her fume in frustration only soured Ericâs mood further. âWho was that guy? Whatâs he to you? Are you seriously upset just because I threw out the lollipop he gave you?â
âWhat are you even talking about?â Hadley blinked, baffled. âHe owns the grocery store nearby where I buy things from. He was just being nice and gave me candy, and you tossed it like it was nothing. Am I supposed to thank you for that?â
