Chapter 156
Too Late, Mr. Billionaire: You can’t afford me now
Chapter 156:
Hadleyâs heart pounded against her ribs. Her tongue felt heavy, but she forced herself to speak. âItâs me.â
A brief silence followed. Then, the manâs voice came through again, this time filled with a mix of shock and something dangerously close to excitement. âHadley? Is this really you?â
She gripped the phone tighter, her other hand pressing hard against her knee. âYeah. Itâs me.â
His reaction was immediate. âCanât believe you actually called me!â His voice wavered slightly before he caught himself. âWaitâdo you need something?â
He seemed to realize how that sounded and quickly backtracked. âI donât mean you canât call unless you need something! Thatâs not what I meant. You can call me anytime. Whenever. Iâll always pick up.â
The way he stumbled over his words made Hadleyâs eyes sting. Her fingers curled into her palm, shaking just a little.
She didnât waste time on pleasantries.
âI need money. A loan. Will you lend it to me? I canât promise to pay it back quickly, but I will.â
âMoney?â He faltered for a second, clearly caught off guard, but there was no hesitation in his answer. âOf course. How much?â
âFive hundred thousand.â
Hadley gave him the number without wavering.
âCome again?â The man was clearly taken aback. His voice shot up slightly as he blurted, âHadley, why do you need that kind of money? What happened?â
Hadleyâs expression hardened. She had no intention of explaining.
âAre you lending it or not? If youâre not, I wonât waste your time.â
âWait!â He rushed to stop her before she could hang up. âJustâdonât hang up yet! Letâs meet in person.â

Meet up? What for? Hadley frowned, immediately wary.
âHadleyâ¦â
He must have sensed her hesitation because his voice softened. âIâll give you the money, I promise. Itâs been years. I just want to see you. Thatâs all. Weâll meet, and Iâll hand the money over. Fair enough?â
Hadley weighed her options. She had no desire to see him again, but five hundred thousand wasnât a small amount, and her childâs life depended on it.
After a long pause, she gave in. âAlright.â
âIâll text you the time and place. Just donât back out on me.â
âI wonât.â
A few days later, Hadley arrived at a private club in the city. It was an exclusive spotâquiet, discreet, the kind of place where people went when they didnât want to be seen.
The irony wasnât lost on her. He was the one who wanted to see her, yet he was also the one going out of his way to stay under the radar. Hadley showed up ten minutes early. Since entry was restricted to members, she had to give his name at the front.
âThis way, please.â
