Chapter 170
Too Late, Mr. Billionaire: You can’t afford me now
Chapter 170:
âThank you, Nyla!â
Hadley pressed her lips together, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.
Eric noticed the spark of happiness in her. Was she really that pleased? And who was this person she claimed to love?
âHadley.â
Nyla couldnât hide the reluctance in her voice, the worry for Hadleyâs future still lingering.
âBring him by sometime, alright? Let me take a look at him.â Nyla thought to herself, Hadleyâs already suffered through one bad marriage because of me. I have to make sure this guy really is the right one for her.
But how could Hadley respond to that?
She offered a smile, keeping her answer vague. âYes, I will. When he has some free time.â
âThen Iâll be waiting.â
Nyla looked over at Eric, who was standing nearby, and waved him over. âWhy are you just standing there? Sit down and join me for some tea.â
âOkay.â
âHadley, my dear.â Nyla motioned toward her. âCan you grab some silverware for Eric?â
âSure, no problem.â
Hadley agreed and stood up to leave.
As soon as she was gone, Nylaâs expression turned serious as she turned her gaze to Eric.
âWho is this person Hadley says she loves?â
âHuh?â Eric blinked, surprised, and shook his head. âI donât know.â
âYou donât know? What a loser!â
Nyla sneered, narrowing her gaze. âWhat did I tell you? I asked you to look out for Hadley like sheâs your sister, and this is how you show up? You donât even know who sheâs seeing?â
Eric fell silent but couldnât resist responding. âIâve never had a sister. I wouldnât even know where to start.â
Nylaâs frustration flared. âYou donât need a guidebook to care about someone. If youâd invested half the energy in Hadley that you put into Linda, she wouldnât be in this situation!â

âGrandma?!â Eric was taken aback, a knot of panic tightening in his chest. âWhat do you mean? Linda and I arenâtââ
âEnough.â Nyla snorted dismissively. âIâm not interested in arguing with you. I just want to know who Hadleyâs with, and if he treats her right. Understand?â
âUnderstood.â Eric nodded, his voice small.
He didnât need Nylaâs instructionsâhe was already determined to find out.
Later, after leaving the sanatorium, Eric drove Hadley home. This time, she didnât wait for him to invite her. She slid into the passenger seat without hesitation.
As the car cruised down the road, Hadley turned to Eric. âWhen do you think we should go to the courthouse? Let me know when you pick a time.â
âSure,â Eric mumbled, his mind elsewhere.
Trying to sound casual, he added, âYouâve only been back in Srixby for a few days, and youâve already found a boyfriend? That was quick.â
Hadley paused, then smiled. âYes. Relationships arenât about how long youâve known someone. You can know someone for years and still not feel a thing.â Her words hung in the air.
Ericâs gaze darkened. Was she implying something about his lack of feelings for her?
A knot formed in his chest, and he tightened his grip on the steering wheel. âDonât let love cloud your judgment, Hadley. Just because a guyâs nice doesnât mean you should throw your common sense out the window.â
