Chapter 199
Too Late, Mr. Billionaire: You can’t afford me now
Chapter 199:
There it was.
Eric gave a slight nod. âUnderstood.â
He paused for a moment, then added, âThis isnât sustainable, though. You should consider leaving Galant soon.â
Hadleyâs expression hardened, but she managed a strained smile. âItâs my livelihood.â
âDo you really need to do this?â Ericâs disapproval was clear. âYou wouldnât be left without means.â
Hadley responded with a sarcastic laugh. âReally? And just how am I supposed to get by?â
âIâll look after you!â
The words escaped Eric before he could stop them, freezing both of them. Hadley blinked, unsure if she had heard him correctly. âWhat did you say?â
Eric swallowed hard. Instant regret washed over him as he realized what he had just said. What was he thinking?
Trying to regain control, he quickly replied, âI mean, our family would support you. Grandma loves you like a granddaughter. Do you think sheâd ever let you go hungry?â
Ah, so that was what he meant.
Hadley exhaled softly, somewhat comforted by his clarification. A faint smile appeared on her face. âBut Iâm not truly a Flynn. While Nyla may care deeply for me, I canât presume on her generosity. The Flynn family has given me so much alreadyâI donât want to be further indebted.â
With a dismissive wave, she signaled the end of their conversation. âItâs late. Iâm heading to bed now. Good night.â She then retreated and gently closed the door.
Eric stood in the hallway, his expression thoughtful.
This Hadley⦠she moved with a certain poise, carefully choosing when to step forward and when to pull back. She was no longer the reckless girl he once knew.
Could any of Srixbyâs elite look beyond her history and truly value her? Ericâs jaw tightened. Cursed be that upcoming birthday gathering. Despite his deep-seated annoyance, he acknowledged his duty to see it through. Above all, he truly wished to be celebrating Hadleyâs birthday with her.

Unbeknownst to Hadley, preparations for the party were already underway.
That very morning, on her birthday, as Hadley sat down for breakfast with Nyla amidst the unusual bustle around the houseâmarked by delivery trucks and busy staffâHadley looked around in bewilderment. âNyla, whatâs happening today?â
Nyla gave her a warm smile, patting her hand affectionately. âItâs your special day, my dear. Weâre preparing for your birthday banquet.â
Hadleyâs eyes widened in surprise. âWhat? But⦠you shouldnât have gone to such lengths. Itâs just another birthday.â
It had been ages since sheâd celebrated her birthday in any significant way. Her own birthday had slipped her mind entirely.
âItâs essential,â Nyla said, her tone filled with genuine regret. âYou werenât introduced properly during the welcome banquet last time⦠We need to rectify that. I want everyone in Srixby to acknowledge that you are as dear to me as a granddaughter.â
âNylaâ¦â
âEverything is set in motion,â Nyla added, her face lighting up with a reassuring smile. âThe invitations have gone out, and the staff are ready. All you need to do is get dressed up and enjoy the evening.â
