Denver scratched the back of his neck, a sheepish grin tugging at his lips. “She is… the adopted daughter of the Flynn family.”

“Denver.”

Wilma’s face soured completely, the strained smile she had been clinging to vanishing like smoke in the wind.

“Listen carefully—I won’t stand for this.”

“What?” Denver reeled, as if the very idea of opposition had never crossed his mind. He was utterly baffled. “Why not?”

“Why not?” Wilma’s laugh was laced with bitter incredulity. “You tell me why! What ‘adopted daughter’ of the Flynn family? That Hadley girl has no roots to speak of! And worse—she is Eric’s former wife!”

“So what?” Denver couldn’t wrap his head around it. “I care for her and want to be with her. Is that such a crime?”

“Denver!”

Wilma faltered for words, her frustration boiling over. In a sudden burst, she brought her hand down hard on the table with a resounding smack.

“Open your eyes! She is not fit to stand by your side!”

Denver could hardly believe his ears.

Hadley was not fit to stand by his side?

With a smirk, he retorted, “That’s just ridiculous…”

“What did you say?” Roderick couldn’t hold back any longer. “Denver, is that how you speak to your mother?”

Confusion clouded Denver’s handsome features.

Wilma was left speechless.

She exchanged a look with her husband.

“Denver,” Wilma said, her voice softening as she noticed her son’s growing irritation, “You were educated abroad and may see things differently, but remember, this is Srixby!”

“Mom.” Denver’s stance remained firm. “My education has nothing to do with this.”

He had braced himself for their resistance and wasn’t caught off guard.

Speaking with deliberate clarity, he made his point.

“What does it matter if Hadley has been divorced?”

Wilma and Roderick were left speechless.

At the social event they had just returned from, they had heard gossip that their son was involved with Eric’s former wife.

Now, hearing their son’s words, they were taken aback to realize the rumors were true.

They were even more shocked by Denver’s passionate defense of Hadley.
