Chapter 388
Too Late, Mr. Billionaire: You can’t afford me now
Chapter 388:
But he hadnât expectedâ¦
âHadley.â He clasped his hands together, fingers twisting as he fought to steady himself. âDo you⦠know everything?â
âYes.â Her gaze was steady as she nodded. âYou know, you donât have to do any of this. Why didnât you just tell your parents thereâs nothing between us?â
âHadley!â Denverâs voice sharpened, almost desperate. âDonât say that.â His voice was unsteady. âHearing you say that hurts more than losing my home.â
She exhaled softly, her tone gentler now.
âDenver, donât walk away from your parents. Go back and talk to them. Theyâre merely acting in your best interest.â
âHadleyâ¦â
A heavy weight pressed against his chest. The past few days had been a nightmare, but through it all, he had refused to break.
He had planned to find Hadley once things were betterâonce he wasnât just barely scraping by.
âYou care about me, donât you?â
Denver shook his head quickly. âIâm fine, really,â he said, forcing a smile that didnât quite reach his eyes. âThis is just a rough patch. With my degree, Iâll land a job soon, andââ
âNo.â Hadleyâs throat tightened. The words caught, but she pushed them out anyway. She couldnât let him brush this off like it was nothing. âYouâre your familyâs only son. You shouldnât have to go through this.â
âHadleyâ¦â
âHear me out.â She took a slow, steady breath. âA real relationship should help both people grow. It shouldnât feel like a weight dragging you down.â
Hadley met his gaze, her voice steady despite the turmoil churning inside her. âDenver, I donât want to drag you down. Youâre my only friend in SrixbyâI canât be the reason you lose everything.â
âHadleyâ¦â
She was already on her feet, her vision blurring at the edges. âJust go home. Iâm not worth the trouble. And from now on⦠we wonât be seeing each other again.â
Before he could say another word, she turned and ran.
âHadley!â
Hadley pushed forward without hesitation, her heartbeat hammering in her ears. Behind her, Denverâs footsteps pounded against the pavement.
âHadley!â
Inside the car, Eric spun his phone absently between his fingers. When he finally glanced up, his brows lifted in mild surpriseâHadley and Denver were sprinting straight toward him.
What the hell was going on?
Before Eric could fully process it, Hadley yanked open the passenger door and scrambled inside.
âHadleyââ
