Chapter 462
Too Late, Mr. Billionaire: You can’t afford me now
Chapter 462:
Stepping out of the hospital room, Hadley drew in a deep breath to steady herself. She intended to check on Elissa next when her phone buzzed to life. It was Mathias calling.
Likely reaching out to confirm the date of Joyâs surgery, she mused.
Her tone brightened as she answered. âDr. Williams?â
âMs. Pearson,â came the reply. âCan you come to the hospital?â
âIâm already here at the hospital!â Hadley let out a soft laugh. âJust give me a second!â
After ending the call, she quickened her steps toward Joyâs ward.
From down the corridor, she caught sight of Mathias. âDr. Williams!â she called out.
But the look on Mathiasâ face stopped her short. It wasnât one of reassurance. Slowing her stride, her smile dimmed. âApologiesâI got carried away. Iâll keep my voice down.â
âItâs okay,â Mathias replied, though his brow furrowed as he motioned toward his office. âLetâs speak privately.â
âOf course.â
At that moment, she hadnât had the faintest inkling of the heartbreak awaiting her.
âDr. Williamsâ¦â
After hearing Mathiasâ words, Hadleyâs face drained of color. She managed a frail smile, clinging to disbelief. âYouâre pulling my leg, arenât you? This canât be happening.â
Mathias shook his head, his expression somber. âSince Joy was admitted over six months ago, Iâve held onto the same hope as youâthat she would pull through.â
A sharp pang gripped Hadleyâs chest, her eyes brimming with unshed tears. Her voice quivered as she spoke. âBut⦠Isnât there anything we can do?â

Mathias let out a heavy sigh, his face etched with both helplessness and remorse. âThe donor withdrew at the eleventh hour. It was beyond our control.â He raked a hand through his hair, frustration evident. âI shouldâve prepared you for this possibility. Itâs not the first time such things have happened.â
And just like that, Hadleyâs hopes were shattered into pieces.
âDr. Williams!â
Hadley squeezed her eyes shut for a brief moment before blurting out, âWho was the donor? Can you tell me? I need to speak with themâIâll plead if I have to.â
âNO!â Mathias interjected swiftly, halting her spiraling thoughts. âYou need to take a step back! Thatâs against the law!â
Hadley froze in place, her eyes growing even redder as the weight of his words sank in.
What now? What would become of Joy?
âMs. Pearson,â Mathias said gently, understanding the depths of a motherâs anguish. âDonât let this break you. Other chances will come⦠Joyâs condition isnât critical just yetâ¦â
Joy was fine now, but what about tomorrow?
Without a surgery to cure her, Joy would be tethered to endless hospital visits and treatments. At best, they could keep her stableâfor now.
But what if that fragile thread of hope unraveled entirely?
Hadley drew in a steadying breath, pressing her palms firmly against the table as she rose to her feet.
âThank you, Dr. Williams. Iâll⦠go see Joy now.â
