Chapter 537
Too Late, Mr. Billionaire: You can’t afford me now
Chapter 537:
The thought was almost laughableâridiculous, even!
As she wrestled with these questions, Eric finished his call and approached her, phone still in hand.
Hadley lifted her gaze to his striking features. Without thinking, she reached out her arms. âHold me.â
Eric froze, his Adamâs apple bobbing as he swallowed. The softness in her voiceâespecially at this early hourâwas utterly disarming.
Noticing his hesitation, Hadley teased him, eyes playful yet challenging. âWhy are you staring at me like that? You donât want to hold me?â
She pouted, pretending irritation. âIâm barefoot. If I walk upstairs by myself, arenât you going to scold me again?â Seated below him, she tilted her chin upward, eyes glittering softly, drawing him in irresistibly.
Truly, she was breathtaking. Eric had always known Hadley was beautifulâbut in the past, heâd never felt compelled to possess that beauty. Now, however, the idea of anyone else even glancing at her made his heart twist uncomfortably.
âIâm more than willing to hold you,â Eric finally said, voice low and gentle. He leaned down and scooped her into his arms. âIn fact, itâs my pleasure.â
Effortlessly, he carried her upstairs and laid her down on the bed with care. âWant to sleep a little longer?â
âNo,â Hadley replied softly, shaking her head. âToo much sleep now, and Iâll be up all night.â
âAll right.â Eric stood, fetched a tablet, and placed it gently in Hadleyâs lap. âHereâkeep yourself busy. Watch some shows or play games. Iâll finish some work and be back soon.â
Hadley rolled her eyes playfully, feigning irritation. âGo ahead. Iâm not a child who needs constant attention.â

âAll right, all right.â He laughed lightly, tucking the blanket snugly around her. Just before leaving, he hesitated and turned back with a curious look. âBy the way, when did you plan on telling me youâd moved here?â
Hadleyâs pulse quickened involuntarily. She shrugged nonchalantly, her tone cool. âI didnât think I had to. The old place was cramped and outdated, and now I share an apartment with someone else. Yesterday was just an accident. Next time, donât barge in like thatâitâs inappropriate.â
âInappropriate?â Eric raised an eyebrow, suddenly recalling something.
âWaitâthe people youâre living withâthey have a child?â Hadleyâs breath caught, her palms growing clammy. âHow did youââ
Eric chuckled softly, pinching her cheek teasingly. âCome on, did you think I wouldnât notice? Yesterday, I saw childrenâs things lying around.â
His expression suddenly darkened. âYouâre not living with a couple, are you? That would mean a manââ
âWhat nonsense are you thinking?â Hadley interrupted quickly, eager to protect Joy at all costs. She kept her tone convincingly casual. âRelax. Itâs just a single mom and her kid.â
Eric visibly relaxed, relief washing over him. âAh, good.â
âSo you really shouldnât keep dropping by whenever the mood strikes you,â Hadley seized the chance to reinforce her point. âPlease donât show up unannounced again.â
With a sly smile, Eric leaned closer and pulled her gently against his chest. âFine. But promise me you wonât just run away like this again. Do you realize how desperate I get when I canât find you?â
Desperate? Hadley scoffed inwardly. He sure knew how to dramatize his concern. Feigning indifference, she replied playfully, âYou look fine to me now. Whereâs all this desperation youâre claiming? Maybe you werenât desperate enough.â
