Chapter 555
Too Late, Mr. Billionaire: You can’t afford me now
Chapter 555:
Hadley was already in bed, her breathing slow and steady, but he wasnât convinced she was fully asleep.
Moving quietly, he entered the walk-in closet, retrieved a set of clothes, and returned to sit at the edge of the bed.
He hesitated for a second, then spoke softly, not wanting to startle her. âHey.â
No response. But he wasnât fooled. The slight flutter of her eyelashes gave her away.
He continued anyway. âLinda is staying in the guest room downstairs tonight. I took a set of your clothes for her. Do you think this set is okay?â
At that, Hadleyâs eyes slowly opened. She didnât look at the clothes. Instead, she let out a quiet chuckle, her voice tinged with amusement and mild irritation. âI was just about to fall asleep, and you woke me up for this? Why does it even matter?â
Eric reached for her hand, feeling the slight tension in her fingers. âBecause theyâre your clothes,â he said gently. âI figured I should ask you.â
Hadley let out a soft, lazy laugh.
âDonât say things like that, Eric. Everything here is yours, not mine. You make the decisions, not me. Didnât you already decide to let Linda stay without asking me?â
Ericâs jaw tightened slightly. âThatâs becauseââ His expression darkened slightly as he lowered his voice. âItâs late, she was upset, and she refused to go home. If she went out alone at this hour, something could have happened.â
How thoughtful of him, indeed!
Hadley didnât bother arguing. It wasnât worth the effort.
Eric let out a slow breath. âThe situation was urgentâI didnât have time to ask you. That was my mistakeâ¦â He paused, studying her expression carefully. âIâll be more mindful next time.â

He wasnât blind. He could tell she wasnât exactly thrilled after everything that had happened tonight.
âAs for these clothes,â he added, glancing at the neatly folded set in his hands. âI noticed you hadnât even removed the tags, so I figured you didnât like them much. Linda can have them, and Iâll have new ones sent to youââ
Hadley exhaled sharply, waving a dismissive hand. âGo on. Sheâs waiting, isnât she? Donât keep her waiting.â
Her tone was indifferent, but Eric felt no relief. In fact, an unexpected tightness settled in his chest.
Why did it bother him that she was letting it go so easily?
âUmm?â Hadley arched a brow when she noticed he was still sitting there. âWhy are you still here? Arenât you leaving?â
Eric hesitated for half a second before finally standing up. âAlright. Iâll go. Get some rest.â
âMhm.â
Hadley gave a small nod, rolling over to face away from him. âDonât forget to turn off the lightsâ¦â
âI will.â
âOh, and one more thingââ Eric had just reached for the light switch when she continued, âIf youâre not coming back tonight, can you lock the door for me? Iâm used to sleeping with the door lockedâI donât rest well otherwise.â
It was a habit she had formed during her time in Blathe. Living alone with Joy had taught her to be cautiousâto instinctively safeguard her space, to lock every door at night.
