Chapter 556
Too Late, Mr. Billionaire: You can’t afford me now
Chapter 556:
âWhat did you just say?â
Ericâs fingers hovered over the light switch, ready to plunge the room into darknessâuntil her words froze him in place.
âWhat do you mean⦠if Iâm not coming back?â His voice was lower now, laced with something unreadable.
Why was it so hard to understand what she was implying?
Hadley opened her eyes again, unfazed. She turned over to face him, her expression calm. âIsnât Linda staying?â Her lips curled into a lazy smile. âI figured youâd want to keep her company. Especially since sheâs so upset!â
What was wrong with what she said?
âHadley, enough!â Ericâs tone sharpened, his patience wearing thin.
From the moment Linda showed up at their doorstep, Hadley had been throwing veiled jabs at him, testing the waters, pushing buttons.
Until now, he had held back. But thisâthis was the last straw.
His voice darkened. âIâve told you time and time againâthere is nothing between Linda and me. What will it take for you to believe me?â
Hadley didnât even hesitate. She shook her head with an easy, knowing smile. âYou donât have to lie to me! Iâm not Ernest, Eric!â
She leaned back against the pillows, her tone turning almost analytical.
âYou looked so concerned about her earlierâ¦â Her words landed precisely where they were meant to. âFor you, following Ernestâs lead has always been second nature. But tonight?â She arched a brow. âYou contradicted him. For her.â
Hadley then gave a small, deliberate shrug. âJust a reminderâif you donât want Ernest to suspect anything⦠maybe try a little harder to hide it.â

âI was concerned about her becauseâ¦â Eric faltered. His mind scrambled for the right words, but none came. How was he supposed to explain?
Hadley arched an eyebrow, watching him stumble over himself.
âBecause what?â
Her lips curled into a slow, knowing smile. âLet me tell you why.â She propped herself up slightly, her gaze sharp. âBecause you simply care about her. You canât stand seeing her suffer, and for a momentâyou lost control.â
Then, something clicked.
âOh, rightâ¦â Her expression turned shrewd as she narrowed her gaze at him. âIs it true? That Ernest is two-timing?â Her smirk deepened.
âAnd if he isâdo you see this as your chance?â
âHadleyâ¦â
âOh, I see it now!â Hadley clapped her hands together, laughing lightly.
âIt is your chance, isnât it?â
She waved him off, her tone laced with amusement and derision. âGo on, Eric! What are you still doing here? Donât waste time with meâgo be her hero!â
âHadley!â Ericâs temper finally snapped. His voice, tight with anger, cut through the air like a whip. âDo you really think so little of me?â
âYes.â Hadley didnât even hesitate.
Tonight, she had seen enough. She was sick of it.
Hadley had always known their relationship was transactional, a mutual convenience. She had never been under any illusions about that. But did he and Linda really have to be so blatant about it? At the very least, they could have had the decency to keep their flirtation out of her sight.
