Chapter 781
Too Late, Mr. Billionaire: You can’t afford me now
Chapter 781:
âHadley!â
âItâs not impossibleâ¦â Ignoring his protests, Hadley continued with a teasing smile, âIsnât that how Ernest first fell for Linda?â
âHa.â Eric laughed, frustration bubbling up within him. âSounds plausible, but itâs utter nonsense!â
He clasped her hand, their fingers intertwining like vines.
âJealous? Arenât you? I rather enjoy it when youâre jealous.â Jealousy signified that she cared about him.
Hadley smiled back, her eyes locked onto his with unwavering intensity. âIs it amusing to play games with me?â
âWhat?â Eric was momentarily stunned, grappling with her words, his mind racing.
Hadley kept her smile intact. âI mean, you always claim to like me⦠Is it entertaining to toy with my feelings? Iâm not a little girl anymore; I wonât buy it like I used to, you know.â
In an instant, Ericâs gaze darkened like a clouded sky. âYouâve⦠never taken my words seriously?â
âNO.â Hadley shook her head, her tone crisp and clear. âItâs all just smoke and mirrors, ahâ¦â
Before she could finish, he tightened his grip around her wrist, perhaps a bit too forcefully.
Hadley winced, surprise flashing in her eyes as she glared at him.
Eric was wrestling with himself, his expression a cocktail of anger and amusement. âSmoke and mirrors? All the kindness Iâve shown youâwas that just an illusion too?â

âKindness?â Hadley curled her lips into a cold smile, too weary to dance around the truth. She cut straight to the chase. âI ran into Addy today.â
Shock and panic flickered in Ericâs eyes like a candle in the wind. âThis is what you call kindness? This is what you define as love?â
âHadleyâ¦â
A tremor of anxiety struck Eric, filling him with sudden panic. This turn of events was completely unexpected.
Holding Hadleyâs hand tightly, he looked to her for understanding. âIâm sorry, I⦠v-â
âJust stop.â Hadleyâs eyes met his firmly, her look intense. âIâm sick of those meaningless excuses.â
âTheyâre not excuses!â In desperation, Eric brought her hand to his lips, scrambling mentally to safeguard his brotherâs secret while trying to soothe Hadleyâs feelings. âI couldnât get the information⦠I was scared youâd be upset, thatâs why I lied!â He preferred Hadley to see him as incompetent rather than dishonest.
âThis is my fault. I didnât give you what you needed. Itâs all on me.â
Hadley hardly glanced at him. âIs that so?â
âYes.â Eric moved closer, kissing her forehead softly, his voice shaky. âThis is my fault. If youâre angry, go ahead and lash out at me, punish me in any way you see fit⦠Just please, donât talk about breaking up.â
Hadley remained silent.
Could she really accept that Eric was unable to track a simple phone number? She doubted it. He likely just didnât want to assist her. Or perhaps there was more he wasnât telling her.
