Chapter 55
Spoiled by Mr. Russell
âAll right, youâve passed the first challenge,â Jenny concluded.
Lily had more or less expected this, but she asked, âThe first challenge?â
Jenny laughed, âYou didnât expect this to be the only challenge, did you? If you want the right to join my team, you play by my rules. Joining our company is no simple task.â Jenny then questioned Lily crudely, âThose who successfully entered the company had to undergo a series of challenging written tests and interviews. What makes you think youâre special?â
That was what ticked Jenny off. When she was a recruit, Jenny had to study hard and undergo many interviews before being accepted into the company. Eventually, she became one of the senior managers at Rebirth. Jenny was confident in her abilities and the companyâs culture of doing things.
In her years with the company, she had witnessed no unjust treatment or nepotism, so when she found out about Lily, she was shocked. Jenny could not figure out the deal with Lily. In any case, she was not interested.
It did not matter who Lily was or the relationship Lily had with the director. It had nothing to do with Jenny. Instead, she did not want someone with questionable abilities to join her team and work with her.
âI have never considered myself an exception, nor am I one. After all, youâre here testing my abilities, arenât you?â Lily refuted calmly, with a polite smile on her face.
She was sincere with her reply, not an ounce of anger or embarrassment detected. Lilyâs poise and demeanor made her stand out and put the people around her at ease.
âYes, youâre right. I was testing you, but this was only the first challenge. It doesnât mean youâve earned my approval.â Jenny was determined not to let her off the hook that easily.
Besides, the first test was just a random one. It was not easy, but it was not too difficult.
Initially, Jenny thought Lily was merely an opportunist and a thief without actual capabilities. After witnessing Lily breeze through the first challenge in front of everyone, Jenny knew it was time to get serious and think of something more challenging.
âMs. Gray, feel free to come up with something more difficult. If Iâm intimidated, count it as Iâve lost.â Lily was fearless. Then she paused, took a step toward Jenny, and smiled.
Looking at her smiling face, Jenny flinched nervously. It was strange. Though Lilyâs smile did not contain an ounce of malice, she could not help but feel uneasy. âWhat do you want?â âNothing. I just wanted to ask you, how many challenges have you prepared for me?â Lily responded.
Jenny took a deep breath and sat straight in her chair. âWhy? Are you afraid now? Werenât you the one promising that youâll take on any challenge a moment ago?â âItâs not that Iâm afraid, but since itâs a wager between us, donât you think itâs best if we both agreed on the terms beforehand? Honestly, I donât mind the type of challenges you decide to throw at me as long as theyâre fair and sensible, Still, Iâd be annoyed if countless challenges awaited me after Iâve completed a few.â
âWhat kind of person do you think I am? What do you mean by countless challenges?â Jenny stared wideâeyed at Lily, her anger almost uncontainable, âLily Christian! Indeed, I donât like you, but Iâve always been a just person. Are you implying that Iâm intentionally making things difficult for you?â
Lily smiled contentedly, âNo, I donât think so. I believe that youâre a fair and sensible manager. Then, how many challenges before accepting me into your team?â Jennyâs hands were balled up into fists on her sides. She tried her best not to lash out at Lily and to maintain a composed demeanor on the outside. Jenny was furious.
