Chapter 680: Give him the benefit of the doubt
Pampered by my three brothers: the return of the neglected heiress
When Finn came to Pennyâs office, she was certain he knew she would have him followed. Thus, Finn went to see Nina, as if he were so sure Jonathan would approach her. He was correct. While Pennyâs people followed Finn, he led them to the very person who had been filling Pennyâs mind with question marks.
"He looks kind." Angel stood around where everyone was seated, holding the stolen photograph of Jonathan. "This is the guy from the sketch? The forensic sketch was amazing. He almost got it."
Mark nodded. "Now that Iâm seeing it up close, he does look like the sketch."
"Let everyone know about this face," Zoren ordered the two. "Itâs better to keep an eye on him now and see what heâs up to."
"Yes, sir." Mark didnât ask questions as he nodded, but Angel was different.
Angel darted his eyes between Penny and Zoren before asking, "Can I ask a question? Just what exactly can this guy do? What did he do to earn your attention?"
Zoren drew his lips into a thin line before moving his gaze to Penny. He thought she should be the one to answer Angel. After all, how could they explain that they were going to keep an eye on this guy because he was someone Penny could remember from her past life?
Penny stared at Angel, expecting such a question. "Heâs going to kill me."
Her answer, however, was something no one expectedâeven Zoren. All three men gazed at her with equal shock and confusion. But Penny remained unfazed by the looks cast upon her.
"He hasnât done anything to me yet," she clarified. "But Iâm certain he would."
After all, how could anyone explain Jonathanâs presence on her execution day? Why would he be there? Jonathan and Penny didnât know each other, and yet, it seemed that the man came to her execution for one reason: to make sure she would die.
Penny might not know his motives yetâwhy he did what he didâbut one thing was certain: this man was someone she shouldnât take her eyes off, even for a second. It seemed, just like her and Finn, Jonathan remembered his past life.
In a situation where three people experienced the same phenomenonâremembering their past lifeâit was all a matter of survival. Just like her, whose heart was burning with determination to survive this life, Penny was certain it was the same for the other two. Although it might not all be about survival, as she wasnât sure if Jonathan had died.
But surviving was also the same as... success as a motivator, right?
"Do you still need to ask me why he wants me dead?" Penny asked, her eyes fixed on Angel. The latter studied her expression before shaking his head.
"Thereâs no need for that," said Angel, tucking the photograph inside his suit. "Everyone will know about this face in a few minutes."
Pleased, Penny nodded in satisfaction. "Good."
Having said that, Angel kept his gaze locked with hers and nodded. At this point, Mark also rose from his seat and faced the couple sternly.
"Since this discussion has reached its conclusion, I will leave you two alone." Mark lowered his head at the two, and even without hearing their response, he turned to Angel. The latter nodded at him before bidding Zoren and Penny goodnight.
Minutes later, Penny and Zoren were left alone in the study room. Silence filled the room as Zoren kept his attention on his wife.
"Are we okay?" was the first thing he asked, making Penny chuckle. "Iâm making sure we are since the children are already away."
"Of course, we are." Penny pushed herself up, advancing in his direction. Without a secondâs hesitation, she sat on the armrest of his seat, almost as if she were sitting on his lap. She fluttered her eyelashes ever so tenderly, smiling at him.
"Actually, weâre more than okay," she corrected. "I was a little scared that youâd deny it and that Iâd have to spend the rest of my days wondering what else you were hiding from me."
Zoren smiled at her. "Thatâs never going to happen. You told me everything about you. Why else would I hide something like this?"
"What if I couldnât accept it?"
"Well." Zoren hummed a long tune, his lips pressed tightly. After a while, he smiled and said, "Iâd pursue you again. Iâd do everything for you to take me back."
"Goodness." Penny blushed, pursing her lips to stop herself from grinning like a fool.
"But I also know you wouldnât make such a rash decision." Zoren pulled her waist closer, beaming with pride. "Our relationship is something I believe will never easily break. Even death will not break it."
Penny couldnât say anything but smile, looking at this precious man who kept making her fall in love with him every day. It wasnât that she didnât believe what he said; it was true. Even death would not break this relationship.
"I have one trouble that I hadnât mentioned to Mark and Angel," Penny whispered, her eyes locked with his. "Renren, what do you think of Finn?"
"Well..." Zoren hummed, updated about Finn and Pennyâs meetings up until now. Although he still didnât know about Penny and Finnâs meeting this morning, she had already told him about their first meeting and Finnâs revelation of his memories about the past.
"Iâm going to say this not because I trust him or because I have a deal with him." Zoren looked at her sternly. "Have you heard of the phrase: gamble what youâre willing to lose?"
"Yes?"
"If I were in your shoes, I would give him the benefit of the doubt. At the same time, I would be careful of him."
"Finn has been keeping more information because he isnât the type to lay all his cards on the table, and Iâm certain, just like you, he canât trust you just yet," he continued. "But if Jonathan has appeared, then Iâm certain he has no choice. He canât do all of this alone. Or perhaps, he can."
Penny listened to her husbandâs thoughts, nodding in understanding. But before she could say anything, she heard her phone vibrate on the table. Her brow arched as both of them glanced at the phone.
"Wait a second," she muttered, pushing herself away from Zoren to check who it was. Her brows furrowed the moment she saw Ninaâs name on the screen. Without a secondâs hesitation, Penny answered.
"Nina?" she greeted, only for her face to darken as she listened to the voice on the other end of the line. "Iâll be there."
After saying that, Penny ended the call and faced Zoren. "Finn got into an accident."
