Chapter 758: Up to something interesting
Pampered by my three brothers: the return of the neglected heiress
[PRIME GROUP: CEOâS OFFICE]
"Pennyâ" Yugi stopped as soon as he opened the door, only to be greeted by a thick wave of silence. When his eyes landed on the person behind the desk, he furrowed his brows.
"Uhh... Penny?" he called. "Is this a good time?"
But Penny didnât answer. She just sat in her spot, holding her hands in front of her face, deep in thought. It didnât even seem like she knew he was there, though he doubted that. Penny might have looked mentally absent, but there was no way she didnât know Yugi was there.
Her lack of response only meant she was busy thinking about something. Hence, she ignored him to avoid being distracted.
"I guess nowâs not a good time," Yugi shrugged. "Penny, Iâll send you a soft copy of some files. Iâll come back when youâre not planning to ignore me anymore."
Having said that, Yugi lingered for a bit before he eventually closed the door. He wasnât even surprised Penny didnât react. He was used to it.
"The last time I remember her being like that was when we were working on the security software and hit a dead end," he muttered, glancing at the shut door. "I wonder what her dilemma is now?"
---
[Back in the CEOâs office]
Penny remained in the same spot. Her reaction was still the same: confused and... thrilled. Before entering the lift, Zoren had asked for her help and told her to call him back once she was in her office.
When she called him back, Zoren told her what had happened. He particularly focused on the events at the Old Residence and Jonathan Pierson, who claimed to be Zorenâs fatherâs illegitimate son.
"So, he showed up?" she murmured, narrowing her eyes suspiciously. "I didnât think he would show up this soon."
But then again, it shouldnât have been a surprise at allâit shouldâve been obvious. Even so, she still felt surprised, whether she wanted to or not.
âFrom my previous life, he is William Piersonâs son, and he married Nina. In this life, he made it seem like heâs Zorenâs brother.âShe tilted her head to the side. âWhat is that guy doing in this lifetime?â
Questions like what he wanted didnât dare cross her mind anymore. Whatever Jonathan wanted or whatever his goal was in this lifetime, she knew it wasnât good.
"Above all..." she trailed off, her lips curving down. "Grandma Pierson."
According to Zoren, Old Mrs. Piersonâs age was showing signs of what many people her age experienced. Zoren was sure of it and had already made arrangements for a proper diagnosis. It was one of the reasons he called her for help.
Before they were a couple, Zoren had been her client. A special client.
"He may not be asking much..." she whispered, humming a long tune. "But if Grandma is stepping down, people... would likely want to fight for a seat... or two."
In other places, if the chairperson stepped down, the heir would take the spot. In this case, that would be Zoren. Under normal circumstances, Zoren would be the CEO, the head of the family, and the chairperson.
After all, most chairpersons would only remain in their positions for a few reasons: to keep control and power because they couldnât let go of what they were used to or the lack of trust in their heir. But Old Mrs. Pierson had held onto this position until now because she was worried about Zoren.
The Pierson family was no ordinary family.
Penny knew this much about the Pierson family because she had studied them as part of her transactions with Zoren. In other words, Zoren could be the CEO, head of the family, and chairperson. However, that wouldnât be easy with many people vying for a bigger share and authority in the family.
"The past few years have already been badâat least, in my opinion," she muttered under her breath, concerned and worried for her husband. "But Renren would usually say itâs not that bad."
If those things happened in the pastâall of those things sheâd heard about and knew had happened in the familyâwhat more now, with even more to fight about?
"Itâs going to be bloody," she concluded quietly, her eyes glinting as they sharpened. "The family gathering hasnât started, but theyâre already starting. I can already hear the sound of a horn being blown from a mile away."
Penny drew a deep breath and leaned back, tapping her fingertips on the armrest of her chair. Whether she was in a professional relationship with Zoren or as his wife, this concerned her either way. Protection wasnât the only thing in her contract with Zoren, but everything about his situation.
If she could help him avoid some problems, she would.
This one, however, was inevitable.
"Unless..." Penny trailed off, biting her lip as she considered Zorenâs health at the moment. "Renrenâs health problems and his temporary eye impairment, Grandmaâs stepping down, Jonathan Pierson claiming to be Zorenâs brother, and William Pierson seemingly being manipulated and used by the cunning Jonathan..."
Penny went completely quiet after verbally listing the things she had to think about. After another minute, she snapped her eyes toward her still-closed computer. A shallow yet sharp sigh escaped her nostrils as she pushed herself to stand.
Without a word, Penny marched outside the office and quietly went to a room on the same floor. She didnât knock, immediately reaching for the knob and pushing the door open. As soon as she did, she stopped and gazed inside.
"Oh, Penny! Nice to see you here!" Yugi raised a hand, trying to get her attention. "Not gonna ignore me anymore?"
Penny slowly moved her gaze to where the sound came from, only to see Yugi seated at the farthest end of the rows of desks. There were more people inside, seated at their desks in front of their monitors. Unlike the usual departments in the company, they didnât have their own cubicles. The employees greeted Penny with quiet bows.
"Give me the Pierson Corporation stock record," she ordered as she stepped in, glancing at the multiple large monitors in the front. "I need to see how their stocks are doing. Mr. Pierson thinks that someone is up to something... interesting."
