Chapter 812: How could there not be any eye witnesses?
Pampered by my three brothers: the return of the neglected heiress
Allenâs explanation for why he was there the night of the incident confirmed Atlasâs theory. Although Allenâs reason caught him off guard, it aligned with what Atlas had guessed about what couldâve happened that night.
"I see." Atlas nodded in understanding, looking at Allen as if he were about to say something insulting.
Seeing the look in Atlasâs eyes, Allen laughed awkwardly. "It was a dumb thing to do, wasnât it?"
Yes â if Atlas were to be direct, that would be the truth.
"Allen, even if you finish a yearâs work in advance, do you think it would make me happy?" Atlas replied, his tone a little dead. "Iâd just find some other work for you and me to do. Meaning, more work for the both of us."
"Hah... now that I think about it, thatâs true," Allen laughed awkwardly. "I guess I was just too happy and excited about the raise I got and didnât think about anything else."
"So next time, even if you find yourself in a similar situation, the first thing you should do is run," Atlas suggested firmly. "Playing the hero is beyond your pay grade. Though I appreciate your loyalty, I donât pay you to do that."
Allen smiled helplessly. "Boss, I did it because that guy has always been a problem for you."
"And let him be a problem. Iâd prefer that over having to look for a new assistant." Atlasâs tone and expression remained unchanged. "Thatâs an entirely different problem, which is also a hassle."
However, Allenâs smile widened, despite Atlasâs unappreciative remarks. His boss might not have said it outright, but Allen understood Atlasâs good intentions.
"Anyway, if this happens again, donât do anything. Although Sven is in custody now, itâs better to be cautious."
Allen nodded in understanding, though his smile faded. "Boss, can I ask you something?"
"What is it?"
"My girlfriend mentioned that Sven tried to finish the job, and if not for you, I wouldâve been dead by now," Allen said. "But the more I think about it, the more confused I get."
Atlas tilted his head. "Whatâs confusing about that?"
"Didnât the police catch him right away?"
"No. Otherwise, he wouldnât have had the chance." Atlas sighed deeply at the thought. "For some reason, the cameras on the floor where the incident happened werenât working that night. There were no eyewitnesses to help with the investigation, and the scene was staged, as you already know. Fortunately, we were able to retrieve dashcam footage showing Svenâs car approaching the company building around the same time you returned."
Deep lines appeared on Allenâs forehead. He wasnât sure if his confusion came from what happened after the incident or if his mind just wasnât processing everything clearly.
"You seem confused," Atlas noted. "Is there something you want to say?"
"No, sir. Itâs just... it doesnât make sense to me."
"What doesnât make sense to you?"
"Why are there no eyewitnesses?" Allen blurted out, still puzzled. "The security guard told me about Sven before I even got in the building."
"What?"
Allenâs furrowed brows deepened. "The security guard on duty that night said Sven was inside to pick up some of his things. He thought Sven came at that time to avoid seeing people in the office. Considering the reason for his termination, it made sense that he wouldnât want to face anyone."
"Initially, I thought you were aware of it and just didnât bother telling anyone. After all, even though Sven Bennett was terminated, heâs still your cousin," Allen continued. "So, the investigation shouldnât have been that hard, especially since the guard saw him that night."
"..." For a while, Atlas was silent, staring at Allen. "None of the security guards said they saw Sven that night."
"What?" Allen frowned. "Thatâs impossible. Iâm sure of it because I kept thinking about it on the way to the office."
Atlas pressed his lips together. "Tell me the name of the security guard. Iâll check again."
"Of course, sir." Allen nodded, pausing as he looked at his boss. "And, sir, thereâs another thing I need to tell you."
"What is it?"
"When I fell down the stairs... I was still conscious," Allen confessed, recalling that moment.
That night, when Allen fell, he briefly lost consciousness. However, when he regained awareness, all he saw was Sven looking down at him from where Allen had fallen. His vision blurred, but he could still see the panic on Svenâs face.
"I remember him... leaving, running away," Allen whispered, recalling how heâd mustered the courage to call for help. But instead of helping, Sven had freaked out and dashed out of the emergency exit, leaving Allen to die.
"Iâm not saying heâs innocent, but I donât think it was Sven who staged the scene," Allen said with certainty. "I was struggling to stay conscious because I was scared that if I passed out, I might not wake up. But after a while, I heard voices around me."
"Do you remember what they were saying?"
Allen shook his head, sighing. "Their voices sounded distant, so I couldnât make out the words. But I do remember one thing: I remember one of the men laughing."
"They were laughing?"
"Mhm." Allen nodded. "They laughed a little when I opened my eyes. I canât remember anything else after that because I was knocked unconscious again."
Silence fell in the ward, neither of them speaking. Atlas mulled over the new information, while Allen continued to think it over.
"Knowing Sven, I donât think he did all of that, sir," Allen spoke again after a long silence, meeting Atlasâs gaze. "Iâm sure because he panicked. I donât think he wouldâve come back to stage the scene and make it look like an accident."
No matter how cruel and narcissistic Sven was, he wasnât that meticulous. If Sven had been that clever, he wouldâve stood a chance against Atlas. But everyone knew Svenâs position in the company was only thanks to the chairman.
"So, youâre saying..." Atlas trailed off, a glint flickering in his eyes. "... Sven must have someone helping him?"
"I canât say for sure, but sir..." Allen paused before asking, "Does your family have any enemies who could be helping Sven clean up his mess?"
