Chapter 0187
The Hidden Princess At All-Boys Alpha Academy
âWhat!â I shriek, scrambling to my knees and knocking the fruit and bread out of my lap.
âShh!â Jackson hisses, turning back towards me and holding out a hand, looking at me like Iâm
crazy. âDonât be an idiot, Ari! If weâre waiting for dawn to move into the ravine, others are too! And
they will come for us! Justâ¦be quiet, all right!?â
âJackson!â I whisper, full of rage, ignoring his words and getting to my feet, striding towards him,
âyou are not leaving me here!â
He huffs a little laugh, clearly implying that I couldnât stop him if I tried. âYeah, Ari, I am.â
âYou are not!â I put my hands on his chest and shove, angry.
âIâll be back!â he says, not budging an inch. âI promise, all right? Iâm not abandoning you â Iâll be
back at dawn, Iâll help you. I justâ¦â
And I go still as I see his head turn again, back the way we came, back to whereâ¦
Well, back to where he imagines she is.
His mate, alone.
His mate, frightened in the wilderness, needing his help.
And then even though I assured him that sheâs safe, that thereâs nothing wrong, he canât leave it.
âJackson,â I beg, wrapping my fists in his shirt and staring up at him. âPlease, please donât do this.â
âI have to, Ari,â he says through his teeth, frustrated with me. âSheâs my mate.â
âSheâs fine!â I insist again, tightening my fists, trying to will him to believe me.
âI know that you believe that,â Jackson snaps, shaking his head. âBut Ari, I smelled her, I could taste
her fear on the air â I swear it, something happened to her.â
âAnd she got through it!â I insist. âDidnât it go away!? Didnât the fear likeâ¦dissipate!?â
âYeah,â he concedes, âbut what if thatâs because she got hurt? What if sheâs unconscious?â He
scowls, stepping away from me roughly, suddenly angry. âI never should have let you drag me away
from there. I should have stayed ââ
âYou should not have stayed!â I snap, getting pissed in my own right now, because Jackson â heâs
being foolish. âSheâs fine! She doesnât need you to go searching for her â she needs you to stay
here, so you can be ready to cross at first light!â
âHow the fuck do you know that, Ari!?â Jackson growls, stepping towards me, looming over me. And
I realize, quite suddenly, that this is a fight â a real fight. And if Iâm not careful, I could make this
Alpha snap, that it could get violent â
But I dismiss the thought, instantly. Because my mate â he wonât hurt me. His body, his biology
wonât let him hurt me.
Exceptâ¦well, except if he doesnât know who I am.
I push it all away, stepping into his space now, unable to help it. âI know that sheâs safe the way Iâve
always known, Jacks,â I reply, my voice low with my own anger in response to his. âHave I ever
betrayed you? Have you ever not been able to trust me? Have ââ
âI probably shouldnât have been trusting you this entire time!â Jackson suddenly exclaims, throwing
up his hands in the air. âI donât know why I do! I mean, is this your magical gift, Clark!? Making me
act like a god damn idiot!? Making me constantly, consistently turn away from my mate and just
believe you that one day youâre going to tell me what the fuck is going on!?â
âYou trust me because you know Iâm trustworthy!â I snap, putting my hands on my hips. âWhat was
all of that about friendship earlier!? About not abandoning me because Iâm the only one whoâs been
nice to you?â
âAnd what is that about, Clark?â Jackson says, his voice a little more dangerous now as he steps
closer to me, moving so close that his chest bounces against mine, making me fall back a step. I
regain my footing fast, scowling at him, suddenly livid that heâd bully me like that â use his larger
form to intimidate him.
