I can tell itâs not easy for her to talk about this as her voice begins to tremble lightly, I even want to reach for her hand but I stop myself. Iâm thinking that would be too much on my end.
Teven think back to how I assumed she cried because she couldnât have me on our wedding night, but it was actually because she missed her mother and her dream was too heart wrenching. I was so fucking wrong.
âSo yeah, thatâs about the bear,â she says, trying to mask her emotions behind a firm tone. âI thought someone might bring up what happened in that aisle and I wanted us to be on the same page.â
It takes me a while to speak as I put myself in Vanessaâs shoes. I donât know what itâs like to lose a parent because I still have both, but I canât imagine losing them while so young.
Clearing my throat, I say, âGreat, Iâm glad youâve told me now. Iâm certain my parents will definitely bring it up.â
When we arrive at my parentsâ house, the front doors open for us and we walk hand in hand.
âAct like you love me.â I whisper to her with a fake smile.
She places her other hand on my chest with a fake smile. âI know that by now. I always do it when it counts.â
âGoodâ
After walking past the staff, who all welcome us, we finally make it to the l
living room and my parents and Sophie are there.
Though Iâm right here, they seem more focused on Vanessa as they mention her first and only mention me afterwards. I canât help but roll my eyes. I guess I should really get used to this, even if Iâm already getting tired of it.

âMe too! Iâm glad you came,â Vanessa says, breaking the hug, then looks over at my parents and gracefully approaches them

âI couldnât wait for you to get here. You look lovely.â My âWhereâs this boy?â
My mother looks around after breaking the hug and it makes me wonder if sheâs referring to me. Iâm right here. Canât she see me? But soon, it
all makes sense.

âIâm right here,â Jake says, coming from the other room while fixing his shades. Iâm actually surprised to see my younger brother here.
âJake? I thought you werenât coming. Iâm so surprised to see him that I raise my eyebrows.
âI changed my mind, big brother and Iâm glad I came early. Have you seen the weather outside? There might be an oncoming storm. Anyway I wanted to see the new couple in town.â He then focuses on Vanessa. âThere she is. Come on, bring it in.â
He opens his arms wide for her and she smiles at him. When she goes in for a hug, he wraps his arms around the narrowest part of her waist and I can see his wide smile. He holds her a little bit longer than he should and I actually want to say something because itâs bothering me, but I stop myself.
Even after they break the hug, he holds her hand firmly and lowers his shades to feast his eyes on her. âYou look beautiful, as always.â
âThank you.â âShe smiles at him. âI really didnât expect to see you here.
âLike I said, I wanted to see my sisterâinâlaw.â
âI thought you said
d you wanted to see the new couple in town,â I chime in, certain of what I heard him say.
âIsnât that the same thing? Jake shrugs at me.
âNo,
, itâs not.â Iâm actually bothered by his change in statements and how his interest in Vanessa seems too obvious.
âWould you like to see the car collection Iâm currently working on?â Jake takes out his phone as he stands close to her.
âOf course.â
âNo, big brother, I said I wanted to talk to her first,â Sophie chimes in.
I can only roll my eyes as the three of them go off together and leave the living room. I know they love her and treasure her, but they better enjoy it while it lasts. They wonât be so close once I divorce her and thatâs in a few months.
As soon as that crosses my mind, I approach my parents. This is the perfect time to speak to them since they havenât yet mentioned anything about yesterday.
âDid you see the news?â I sit close to both of them, shutting down my phone in case Carmella calls
âOf course we did.â My father nods. âSon, everyday, you give me reasons to be proud.â
I nod to myself. Thatâs exactly what I wanted to hear.
âAbout my wifeâs leg discomfort at the hospital, I didnât know she would end up-
âit doesnât matter. I know how much she cares and itâs like you said, she hid her pain from you so she could see everyone at the hospital. Iâm glad you took good care of herâ
âI wasnât going to let her exert any more pressure on her calf.â
âI know, son.â
âBut I guess you preferred carrying her over using the wheelchair!â My mother chuckles. âThatâs just how it is with newlyweds.â
My father nods, then adds on, âEach day, youâre becoming more of the man I want you to be.â
Such talk only makes me think about how in no time, heâll be giving me my dream company and then I can do whatever I want.

Chapter 31
After dinner is served and my parents and I move to the dining room, Vanessa returns while holding hands with Sophie.
Jakeâs a few steps behind and heâs taken off his shades. He keeps glancing at Vanessaâs figure. I know my brother, but thereâs nothing I can
say right now.
Though Iâm already in my seat, I instantly get up and pull out a chair for Vanessa.
âThank you.â She smiles while facing forward.
I canât help but glance at her ass as she places it down in her seat. I need to stop doing this to myself.
As we all have dinner together, there are so many mini conversations around the table until finally, my motherâs voice is loud enough to catchi everyoneâs attention while she speaks to me and Vanessa.
âNow that youâve seen Penelope and all the other children, donât you think you should finally go on a proper honeymoon?â
âIf my wife wants it, weâll do it.â I turn to face Vanessa. âDo you want us to go?â
Iâm hoping she doesnât say yes.
âOnly if you want to go.â She smiles at me lovingly.
âThen I guess weâll discuss it more when we get home.â
âExcellent,â my father chimes in. âYou two need to enjoy your marriage and now that I think about it, when you decide to go, make sure youâll
have no rat problem this time. I know how awful it was, especially for Vanessa.â
Vanessa chuckles. Sheâs definitely enjoying this. I can tell.
âWell, I have some great news, everyone.â Sophie grabs everyoneâs attention from across the table. âIâll be launching my first diamond necklace collection and Iâd like Vanessa to try on a few pieces.â
âMe?â Vanessa points at herself.
fit. I do
âOf course! Youâll be the perfect fit. I donât have a specific target audience, but I really want to see the pieces on you before they launch. So what do you say?â
âOf course Iâll do it.â Sheâs highly enthusiastic about it.
Just then, Jake clears his throat while sitting next to me. âSo, brother, you and my lovely sisterâinâlaw have been all over the news. It actually boosted sales in some of our subsidiaries.â
âThatâs all great news,â my father responds before I can. âWhile Iâm glad you two are doing all this for a good cause, itâs also perfect practice for when youâll be raising my grandchildren.â
I instantly choke on my drin
