Chapter 1002
A Life Debt Repaid
To be honest, Patrick was ready for the worst case scenario when he left with Sean.
John did save Cordy with his life, and if he asked, there was every chance Cordy would break down and throw herself into his arms.
Thus, Patrick was surprised Cordy was so determined to reject John. In fact, she refused to listen to any of Johnâs explanations and remained determined to reject his advances even after he admitted that he had regained his memories.
Did she not love him anymore? Or did she love him too much and was afraid to get hurt again?
At the same time, Cordy wiped away her tears ever so subtly.
There was just no controlling it when your heart hurt so much.
However, she will slowly change that from now on, and slowly forget how she felt towards John Levine.
âIâm sorry,â she suddenly told Patrick.
Patrickâs heart skipped an anxious beat.
She obviously rejected John just now, but was she already regretting it?
Did that mean his happiness only lasted forâ¦minutes?
He stared at Cordy, afraid to even breathe too loudly or say another word. Great despair overwhelmed him all over a sudden.
However, Cordy smiled. âIf you can give me time, I swear Iâll never cry for other men ever again.â
Patrick froze, realizing right then that he had misunderstood Cordy.
She was just apologizing-not breaking up with him.
âAre you upset?â Cordy asked with a faint smile, since he wasnât responding.
âNo, I just thoughtâ¦â Patrickâs eyes were a little moist, and he was greatly overwhelmed. âCordy, Iâll do right by you-more than he ever could.â
âI know.â
âI tried to reach you during the fire, but someone knocked me out, so I couldnât save you,â Patrick rambled as he explained. âAnd then your dear cousin just had to stop me, or I wouldâve tried to save you, instead of letting Johnâ¦â
âYeah, I know,â Cordy said, nodding.
She was aware that Patrick would never abandon her. Plus, since Nana was prepared to go that far, that woman would definitely cover every corner.
Still, Patrickâs tone turned solemn. âI donât mind it, Cordy, but I want to ask⦠â
As he trailed off in hesitation, Cordy saw through him and said, âYouâre trying to ask how I could break up with John so thoroughly?â
Patrickâs gaze darkened, and he was clearly a little dejected. âLook, itâs not like I mind it, but I just donât get it. John knows how much he loves you now that heâs regained his memories, and he even saved you from the fire. You shouldâve chosen him, even if it was just gratitude from that gesture⦠Or do you feel guilty towards me?â
âNo,â Cordy denied it right away. âIt has nothing to do with you. Itâs over between him and me, even if Iâm not with you.â
âDonât you find that a pity?â
âBefore this, yes⦠To be precise, I felt that way before I learned that he remembered his past. After that, I donât find it a pity at all.â
Patrick was obviously confused, so Cordy patiently explained, âIf he never remembered, Iâd always think that giving up on him before he could gain his memories would be unfair to him. Despite that, I gave up on him anyway, since all it means is that weâre just not meant to be. But now that heâs remembered everything, itâs not unfair anymore. I no longer carry any attachments towards him.â
âYou already fell out of love for him?â Patrick asked carefully.
âNo.â Cordy shook her head.
Patrick felt a little stressed, but this was within expectations-no one got over a breakup that quickly.
And if Cordy was that casual about relationships, he wouldnât have loved her to bits.
âNow that he remembers, he knows all too well what Iâm like-that I meant it when I said Iâm leaving him,â Cordy continued. âBut in the end, he still chose to face everything all alone. Since he wants to push me away, Iâm just going to let him have his wish.â
âBut what if he really has his own predicaments? You know the Lynds are no angels,â Patrick said, able to see things clearly despite being a rival to John.
âLike I said, he knows me,â Cordy repeated. âWhen he chose to face everything himself, he wouldâve been prepared that Iâd leave him.â
