A Life Debt Repaid By Cheng Xiaocheng Chapter 216
A Life Debt Repaid
Zoe heaved a sigh of relief⦠only to get nervous again soon enough. âWait, what is Grandpa going to do John? John clearly wasnât going to agree to the engagement.â
âI called you specifically to warn you about that,â Nancy snapped. âDonât try to meddle with Johnâs engagement with Jessica! I know youâre buddies with Cordy, and I wonât stop you from making friends, but you have no right to interfere with certain matters-not that you can!â
âMomâ¦â Zoe groaned.
âAnd your grandpa is telling you to go home tonight for dinner,â Nancy added, giving Zoe no chance of refusal.
âBut why?â Zoe asked.
After all, Alan had grown to dislike hustle and bustle over the last few years. In fact, there were rarely any family dinners, and he only attended a couple of social events unless absolutely necessary.
It was certainly no Christmas or Thanksgiving now, so why was she suddenly summoned home?!
âJessicaâs grandfather is coming for dinner and discussing Johnâs engagement with her.â
âAnd what does that have to do with me?â Zoe asked.
âJust shut up and come home for dinner!â Nancy snapped angrily.
âFine,â Zoe gave in immediately, not daring to refuse at all-no one would help her stay in showbiz if she offended her mommy dearest!
Still, Zoe soon remembered something and quickly asked, âWait, would John be at the dinner too?â
âWhat do you think?â
Zoe could imagine her mother rolling her eyes at her even from the other end.
âI mean, I havenât been able to reach John since last night. Grandpa is keeping him under house arrest, isnât he? And if Grandpa is worried about me causing troubleâ¦â
âDonât worry. He never does anything he isnât sure about,â Nancy said assuredly.
Zoe certainly had more to say but Nancy cut her off. âBe home on time or Iâll break your legs. We shall see what roles youâll get after that!â
Zoe said nothing and hung up before quickly texting Cordy.
[I wonât be coming home for dinner tonight. Donât wait for me.]
[Okay.]
The reply from Cordy was instantaneous. It suited her as well, since she would be working overtime.
Zoe then sent: [Iâll be having dinner at Levine Manor, and I should be able to meet John. Grandpa must have him confined, which is why I canât reach him. I can relay anything he says once I see him.]
Cordy did not reply this time, and Zoe pursed her lips.
Whatever happened, she must find out what John really thought tonight.
After removing her makeup, Zoe quickly left the dressing room since she could not wait to see John.
But when she opened the door, she found herself staring at Mandyâs face.
They held each otherâs gaze for a moment, and Zoe was about to leave when Mandy started bragging, âJay and I are really in love. He protected me even though Iâm riddled with scandals.â
âSo what are you trying to say?â Zoe asked, wheeling on Mandy and scoffing. âThat youâre both vipers sharing a nest? That youâre both terrible people and deserve each other?â
âQuit being sour grapes, and thereâs no need to pretend. You like Jay, donât you?â Mandy said confidently. âYou stole my role because you slept with him, no?â
Zoe shrugged. âWhyâd you presume that everyone is as blind as you are, or that they all sleep around for roles?â
âShut up!â Mandy snapped angrily. âIâm warning you-stay away from Jay! I can remove b*tches like you who have no connections or influence in showbiz! And know this: Iâll be visiting his parents at his home, and weâll be married soon enough!â
