A Life Debt Repaid By Cheng Xiaocheng Chapter 375
A Life Debt Repaid
Patrick went silent for a while.
Cordy would rather not explain herself, but seeing that Patrick had traveled all the way here, she should at least give him a reason to leave. âI understand your reasoning, and thereâs definitely a lot in it for me.
However, I refuse to take part in this grudge match, just as I lack the capacity for it.â
âYour families stand at a level far above my reach or recognition, and I donât have that much ambition because all I want is a peaceful life.
Naturally, you can argue that thereâs no peace to be had in my life right now, and Iâll admit as much-but at the very least, I wouldnât go out of my way to allow that peace to slip through my grasp by my own doing.â
Patrickâs Adamâs apple rolled, and he suddenly asked, âBecause of your son?â
The change in Cordyâs expression was all too obvious.
âItâs not that hard to find out,â Patrick added bluntly.
Cordy glared at him. âIf thatâs the type of person you really are, Mr. Stuart, I donât believe thereâs a need to continue this discussionââ
âIâm not despicable enough to threaten you with your child,â Patrick quickly explained.
âI certainly know about the saying that mothers are strong. But donât you think you owe your own son the same peace you crave?â
âThatâs my business,â Cordy replied coolly. âIf you really arenât going to threaten me as you say, donât even think about it.â
âAlright,â Patrick nodded, his tone suddenly changing. âBut can I just ask⦠Do you really not want to take your own destiny upon your own hands? Are you going to keep bearing the humiliation of everything Jessica Staurt threw at you? Or perhaps, you were pinning your hopes on John Levine? Heâs a businessman. Even if I wonât deny that he has feelings for you, thereâs rarely anyone who has such resolve and would stand with one choice to the end, especially when they lose more than what they gain.â
âWell, youâre a businessman too, Mr. Stuart,â Cordy scoffed. âMoreover, weâve just met. What makes you think Iâd trust you enough to work with you? Common goals?
What if one day we share nothing in common?
Policies change, and you are a Stuart at the end of the day. In the case where your family kisses and makes up, wonât I just be disposed of as an expendable asset?â
âAnd thatâs why Iâve brought you a gift, Miss Sachs.â Patrick suddenly took out another document envelope from his briefcase.
Cordy stared at him, presuming immediately that he was bribing her.
Before she could say no, Patrick said earnestly, âPlease, take a look first.â
Cordy ultimately opened it, and her face dropped the instant she saw what was inside.
She certainly didnât expect him to go that far to win her partnership!
She promptly turned back to Patrick, who smiled and said, âIf you ever think that Iâve betrayed you, you may use that to destroy my reputation. But I must emphasize one thing-no matter how things end between John Levine and Jessica, Iâm the only one who can protect you for the time being. At the very least, if you work with me, sheâd never dare to call upon her influence to bring you harm.â
Even so, Cordy stayed silent.
Patrick in turn rose to his feet. âPlease take your time to consider, Miss Sachs.â
âWait. You forgot this.â Cordy held out the envelope.
âKeep it,â Patrick told her. âAs a token of my sincerity of a future partnership. Iâm convinced I still stand a chance before you reject me entirely.â
âAlright, you have a deal,â Cordy suddenly said.
Patrickâs lips curled into a smile, but he promptly hid his delight.
The Stuarts really were stoic, werenât they?
Still, it wasnât his sincerity that convinced her; it was his words.
Mothers are strong.
And Cordy definitely should try, for Dickyâs sake.
