A Life Debt Repaid By Cheng Xiaocheng Chapter 377
A Life Debt Repaid
Cordy had a hunch about what John was going to say.
Even if her partnership with Patrick Stuart hadnât been publicized, all insiders were aware since news of it had spread through alternative outlets. In fact, it actually drew some controversy amongst the business folk.
Of all things, the great house of Stuart actually chose to partner with Cordyâs small enterprise!
If anything, they should be choosing an enterprise like Levine Ventures, whose riches seemed to have no limit.
But the deed was already done, and now everyone just had to wait and see what comes of it.
âCome in,â Cordy said, opening the door.
John followed her inside; he took a seat on the couch and went straight to the point, âWhy would you choose to partner with Patrick Stuart?â
âItâs a perfect coincidence of opportunity and merit,â Cordy said, as formal as she was honest.
John snorted. â Donât you know whatâs happening amongst the Stuarst at the moment?â
Cordy shrugged. âAll I know is that I only stand to gain this partnership.â
John had to restrain his emotions. âCordy, are you really unable to tell what heâs going for?â
âItâs just tit-for-tat, which is how all partnerships work.â
âPatrick only told you that William Stuart wants to usurp his familyâs political influence, but heâd never tell you that his own grandfather is terminally ill,â John said loudly and clearly.
Cordy blinked.
Seeing her remaining quiet, he demanded, âWilliam Stuart is able to violate his own familyâs rules without any qualms because the timing is right. Do you think itâs good for you to get involved right now?â
âPatrick can help me fend off Jessica Stuart,â Cordy said coolly.
âBut what if heâs toppled?â
âI didnât think that far.â
âYou were never impulsive before, Cordy.â
âSo you think I should pin all my hopes on you?â Cordy snapped, suddenly a little loud.
Johnâs knuckles clenched in return. âAm I that unworthy of your trust?â
âYou just said that the time is right for William Stuartâs rise to power. If Patrick Stuart-a Stuart, no less-canât beat him, do you think Iâd believe you can?â
John stared fixedly at Cordy as she spoke, her eyes red and moist.
âI wasnât involved in this fight in the first place, but you dragged me in anyway! I have no way of fighting back, and all I could do was pick a way to protect myself! To put it bluntly, Jessica Stuart wants me dead. I have to tiptoe around everyday, worrying about her next strike as long as her family doesnât fall. My only hope now is Patrick Stuart. With him, I at least have a shot at winning, or it would mean death! How would you choose if you were in my shoes, John Levine?!â
John kept calm. âBut you have to know⦠Itâs not just Jessica now. After you partnered with Patrick, every member of her side of the family will be after you!â
âLet them come,â Cordy said flatly. âOne wolf or a pack makes no difference.â
John gulped, clearly holding back his feelings.
Cordy said nothing in turn, and silence befell them once more.
âItâs late,â she eventually said. âYou should go-*
âCan I have a bowl of pasta?â John asked.
Cordy blinked-she was just under the impression that things were so hostile between them that they couldnât be under the same roof.
âI was too busy hurrying back,â John continued. âAirplane food is inedible, so I never ate.â
Cordy pursed her lips, but ultimately gave in. âJust wait a moment.â
âThanks,â he replied.
Cordy got up and went to the kitchen to start cooking.
She had been learning over the past couple days, but had to admit that she lacked the gift. The result was less than satisfactory.
It was a while until she finally dried the pasta. Still, she was about to call John over when she found her asleep on the couch.
The fatigue on his face was clearly visible. Likewise, she knew very well how busy he was, and how much it was for her sake.
She sighed, and took a blanket from the room to drape over him.
He wiggled, as if struggling against her touch, but remained asleep otherwise.
She turned and headed to her study, where she worked while waiting for John to wake up.
