A Life Debt Repaid By Cheng Xiaocheng Chapter 402
A Life Debt Repaid
Cordy and Johnâs eyes met.
There seemed to be unspoken emotions in their gazes, yet at the same time, there seemed to be nothing.
Silence ensued between them until Jessica spoke up,â Patrick, my dear cousin-a shame that you beat me to a partnership with Cordy!â
âIs that so?â Patrick replied, cordial as ever with Jesscia.
âIâve been saying that Iâd like to partner with her, but never did have the chance,â
Jessica said, appearing genuinely disappointed. âOn the other hand, you seemed to really hit it off with her! Itâs left me really upset for a while.â
âNow, nowâyou shouldnât overreach, Jessica. Mr. Levine there leads a lot of people and multiple elite businesses. Iâm just a startup, so donât snuff me out so soon now,â
Patrick said, seemingly jokingly as he jibed Jessicaâs family for their greed.
âCome on. Weâre family, arenât we? Whatâs mine is yours. You have my best wishes in your partnership with Cordy- Johnny, here. Letâs drink to their success,â Jessica said.
She had her hand intimately wrapped around Johnâs arm, and tugged on John deliberately when she was offering a toast, as if to endear herself to him.
Cordy watched coolly, as John didnât raise his glass or refuse.
He didnât raise his glass to drink when Jessica told him to either, which left things looking a little awkward.
Patrick quickly smoothed things over. âYou might not be aware, Mr. Levine, but Miss Sachs wonât be able to drink for the next couple daysâ¦for health reasons.â
John looked sharply at him then, but Patrick pretended not to notice as he continued, âSo, in this case, we can skip the toast-weâre family anyway, so thereâs no need to get so formal. Youâre the main event as well, and thereâs more guests to mingle with. Donât worry about us. Weâre family, after all. We can handle ourselves from here.â
âIn that case, we shall oblige,â Jessica smiled. âPlease, enjoy the ball. John and I shall be going now.â
âAlright. Scoot.â
And with that, Jessica tugged on Johnâs arm, gesturing for him to leave.
Even so, Johnâs eyes were glued to Cordy, who looked so naturally beautiful standing at Patrickâs side.
âJohnny,â Jessica reminded him softly, âyour grandfather and mine are right over there.â
John gulped, but ultimately left with her without saying a word.
Once they were gone, Patrick sighed. âShame.â
Cordy took a sip of her glass of water, and asked nonchalantly, âWhat now?â
âJohn not eloping with you right there and then.â
Cordy rolled her eyes at him, while Patrick shrugged. âI wanted to provoke him a little, push him over the edge so that he storms out of the ball with you. Heâd be burning bridges with Williamâs side of the family while I sit back enjoying the spoils.â
âYou underestimate him too much,â Cordy said bluntly.
âWell, heâs certainly more composed than I gave him credit for.â Patrick chuckled.
âJust like how you give me too much credit,â Cordy added flatly.
It was an objective statement to clarify that Patrick had overestimated her importance to John.
âActually, you underestimate your importance to him, Miss Sachs,â Patrick chuckled.
âIf you were watching Johnâs hands, youâd see that heâd be crushing his own bones if he was clenching them any harder.â
Cordy blinked, but quickly averted her eyes after a brief glance.
They had both chosen their own paths, and such was lifesympathizing with another was simply unnecessary.
âItâs a little stuffy here. I need a breather,â Cordy said, putting down her glass and ready to leave.
âHold on.â Patrick stopped her. âThe good part is just getting underway.â
