A Life Debt Repaid By Cheng Xiaocheng Chapter 470
A Life Debt Repaid
In the middle of the quiet meal, Johnâs phone suddenly rang. He glanced at the caller, and his expression twisted slightly.
âItâs Grandpa.â
Gordyâs eyes twitched slightly, but she continued looking down and eating her breakfast. John would take it outside and away from her hearing range if it were a private call.
After all, thatâs what happened every time Jessica called.
âWhat is it?â
After a moment, a hint of panic flashed across Johnâs face.
Cordy wondered what had happened that could cause Johnâs mood to change so drastically. She could see his hand holding the phone had also started to shake.
His eyes also seemed to have reddened.
âOkay. I got it.â
John put his phone down and sat silently for a long time, his eyes staring at nothing in particular.
âWhat happened?â Cordy finally asked.
What had overwhelmed John to this state?
âJay, he⦠thereâs been an accident,â John said, clearly trying his best to control the emotions in his voice.
Cordy felt her heart get stuck in her throat.
Judging by the look on Johnâs face, it was not a minor accident.
âLast night, his car rolled off the mountainside at eleven. It was a completely different slope than the one your accident was at. They only managed to rescue him at five this morning. Heâs still in critical condition at the hospital right now. Theyâre not sure if heâll make it.â
John sounded choked up, and he was clearly struggling to keep calm.
Cordy was anxious then, and she didnât know what to say, much less how to comfort him.
âI have to go back,â John said bluntly.
Cordy nodded. âIâll go with you-â
âNo, stay here for now. Itâs safer than North City,â John said firmly.
Cordy moved to argue but ultimately decided to accept his words. She didnât want to start a fight at this time with John.
âIâll be back as soon as possible.â
âItâs fine. Iâm alone here, so I have plenty of freedom,â Cordy said honestly.
She also didnât want Jay to miss out on seeing Jay because of her. What ifâ¦
Cordy felt her stomach lurch at the thought and didnât want to think any further than that.
Jay still had a fighting chance as long as the hospital tried to save him.
Besides, medical technology had advanced a lot in modern days, so it was highly likely that Jay would live.
John didnât say anything more. He didnât bother eating another bite of breakfast and left directly.
Cordy didnât have much appetite left after the news either, so she picked up her phone and crutches before heading to the back garden to sit.
News of Jayâs accident weighed heavily on her mind.
She had set Jay up before but still hadnât apologized for it!
Opening a browser, she looked through the news to find nothing on Jayâs accident.
Perhaps his family had kept the information under a tight lid and didnât want to deal with the media.
In that caseâ¦
Did Zoe know about it?
After hesitating for a few moments, Cordy decided to let it be.
Zoe had already gotten together with Bob, so Cordy didnât want to disrupt their happiness. Besides, Bob had a close friendship with Jay, so he would know soon. If his heart were in the right place, he would tell Zoe. If not, Cordy should respect his decision since it was not her place to interfere in the coupleâs relationship.
It was best to leave that decision to them.
Cordy took a deep breath and thought about Jayâs life and current situationâ¦
Wasnât God a little too cruel to him?
