A Life Debt Repaid By Cheng Xiaocheng Chapter 491
A Life Debt Repaid
Patrick chuckled and teased her, âSo you actually can get nervous?â âI just want to know the truth,â Cordy replied. âJessicaâs wedding with John concerns my safety and personal gain.â
Yes, she was just being selfish. The only thing she cared about was whether she could get Dicky even though the wedding fell through!
Patrick shrugged and stopped leaving her hanging. âBefore John could say1 I doâ, Rocktownâs police commissioner himself stormed in with a warrant for his arrest.
Turns out Johnâs a suspect in a corporate criminal conspiracy.â
Cordyâs fingers clenched. Patrick asked her, âDo you know what that means?â
âThe weddingâs off,â Cordy replied.
Patrick laughed at that. âEven I canât bear to watch this, Cordy. The man would go this far for you, not holding back from destroying his own reputation and his own future just to stop this wedding. And youâre being this calm?â
âHow else would I react? Can I change anything?â Cordy asked in return. âI donât get it-how is this different from just rejecting the engagement? Heâd be ruining his reputation, anyway!â
âI thought youâre usually smarter than this,â Patrick said skeptically.
Cordy stayed silent despite her anger, so Patrick simply pointed out, âDid you really think itâd go smoothly even if he said no to the engagement? Or that Jessicaâs family wouldnât threaten his family in retaliation? Citizens should never pick fights with government officials-or did you miss that lesson?â
âBut he lost everything now,â Cordy argued.
âIn return, he protected certain individuals,â Patrick replied with no uncertain terms.
As Cordy bit her lip, he continued, âEither way, Jessicaâs family would refuse to touch John with a ten-foot pole now that heâs been charged. Now itâs them whoâs rejecting him and not the other way around, since John provided the perfect excuse for them to annul the engagement, and without them losing any face.â
âIsnât he worried theyâd plot against him?â Cordy asked, skeptical about the logic in the decision. âAlso, Jessica would definitely retaliate for not getting John. You know sheâs capable of anything.â
âMaybe, but Jessicaâs family would have nothing to do with it,â Patrick said plainly.
âOur family has a reputation to uphold, and William wouldnât try to kick John when heâs downâat least, not out in the open. In fact, he wouldnât waste time on the Levines or anyone involved with them now that the Levines are worthless as an ally, since they should be looking for their next target to replace John.â
âAs such, no matter how frustrated or vengeful Jessica would be, she would be alone⦠So thereâs nothing to fear, really.
Cordy was left stumped at that.
She had no idea whether John really sabotaged his own future just for this, or if he was really arrested for breaking the law.
They agreed that he would marry Jessica, didnât they?
How could he let it be called off halfway through?
âAnyway, I just asked around,â Patrick told her. âHeâs being held at Rocktown Detention Center at the moment, but since the crimes heâs charged with were committed in North City, heâd be transported there for his trial in five days at most. Do you want to see him right now, or wait until he is taken to North City?â
âRight now, I need to calm down,â Cordy replied.
âThen I wonât impose,â Patrick said, and hung up immediately.
Cordy in turn reclined over her couch, staring quietly and blankly at the ceiling.
There were so many things to consider, and it was such a huge mess that she suddenly couldnât differentiate anything.
The next day, news that John Levine had been arrested during his own wedding was being published nationwide.
The initial media blackout, only to be followed by the sudden widespread coverage, was a clear sign that the Stuarts abandoned him.
In fact, just half an hour after the first headlines were published, the Stuarts issued the annulment of John and Jessciaâs engagement. In their official announcement, they maintained that their family had served the country for over a century with honesty and diligence, free from any criminal wrongdoing. Therefore, any involvement with individuals charged with criminal offenses would be an insult to their legacy.
With the annulment now official, news of it quickly spreadâ¦
