Chapter 688
A Life Debt Repaid
[Oh.]
Quinn didnât ask further questions at that. She knew that Cordyâs life was all about Dicky now, and Cordy would never say no to the boy.
Zoe then added: [By the way, I miss him a little now that youâve mentioned him.]
Cordy offered: [Want to see him? Heâs a little hunk now, and almost my height.]
Zoe refused. [Forget it. That can wait until Iâm successful⦠I mean, I used to be, so I canât let Dicky feel that Iâm down and out. Or at least as successful as Cora.]
[Youâre still as successful as her.] Quinn butted in.
[Zip it. Do you think youâd be that nonchalant if youâre in my place? Iâve just been assigned a harder grind for now. Once I overcome this, Iâll be a star again.]
Cordy couldnât help smiling at that.
Just then, someone knocked on her door.
âCome in,â she said.
Dicky entered her room in dark-blue pajamas.
Cordy checked the time to see that it was already past nine.
What was he doing up? Wasnât he supposed to be tired?
Somehow, he appeared to have a lot weighing on his mind. What on earth was going on?
Cordy quickly put down her phone. âWhatâs wrong, Dicky?â
âNothing,â Dicky replied, quickly shaking his little head. âI saw that your lights were still on, so I came over.â
âWhy arenât you sleeping? Canât sleep? Or are you not used to this place?â
âNo, Iâm justâ¦â Dicky was once again hesitant to speak.
âWhat is it? Canât you tell me?â Cordy asked, regarding him seriously but also teasing him. âIs there a girl you like?â
âNo.â Dickyâs little cheeks flushed, though Cordy already knew that-she just wanted Dicky to relax.
Then, he asked, âMommy, donât you miss Daddy?â
Cordy had a hunch that was the case.
John was about the only person whom Dicky would get melancholy about.
âNo. You canât raise the dead,â she replied.
âBut what if heâs alive?â Dicky said seriously.
âThereâs a real shortage of miracles in this world, Dickyâ¦â
âI mean, what if Lucas is Daddy?â
Cordy sighed. 1 She had no idea how to curb Dickyâs enthusiasm and obsession with Lucas, since even the parental test before couldnât convince him.
Nonetheless, she said, âDicky, Iâd rather your daddy stay dead, than find out that Lucas was actually him.â
Dicky stiffened for a moment, and there was a brief flash of disappointment in his eyes.
âWhy?â he asked softly.
âBecause I canât accept a man who cheats on me, whatever the reason may be,â Cordy replied.
âWhat if he lost his memory?â
âThatâs not an excuse.â
âBut what if heâs really Daddy? What would you do?â
âIâd leave him,â Cordy said sternly. âEven if Iâd be heartbroken.â
Dicky bit his little lip.
For Cordy, she didnât really intend to curb his enthusiasm. At the same time, she wanted nothing more than for Dicky to stop his obsession with Lucas.
Their family shouldnât be affected because of someone trivial.
It then occurred to her that they should return to North City soonâDicky probably wouldnât get any funny ideas if he wasnât around Lucas.
And so, she said, âIâll tell your great-grandfather that weâre going back to North City tomorrow.â
âAlready?â Dicky was obviously reluctant.
And here he was thinking he could stay longerâ¦
