Chapter 712
A Life Debt Repaid
Zoe noted that Sam still had that old, fashionable buzz cut of his as he walked up and stared down at her. âSorry to disappoint you, but Iâm here to post bail for Quinn.â
Zoe pursed her lips-she would still feel awkward being caught red-handed for bad-mouthing someone behind their back.
âSam,â Jay called out to the man just then.
As Sam turned towards his friend. Jay gestured with his chin. âGet registered over here.â
Sam headed over right then, while Zoe turned toward Quinn, who was smiling faintly.
Zoe simply could not understand-she always knew that Quinn had no love for Sam, so why did Quinn insist on sticking with him?
After the paperwork was done, all four of them left the precinct together.
Sam and Jay had been talking for a while when, considering that Jay had trouble walking, Sam asked, âNeed a ride?â
âItâs fine. My chauffeurâs here.â
âIâm going, then.â
âCome hang out when youâre free,â Jay said then. âBobâs been complaining that you havenât been talking to us, and itâs been days since you got out.â
âYeah,â Sam nonchalantly replied and headed toward the two black cars parked just ahead.
His license had been suspended for life following the drunk-driving slash hit -and-run, and it was his family chauffeur who brought him out here.
Seeing that he was getting into his car, Quinn quickly told Zoe in turn, âIâm going now,â
Zoe was left staring at Samâs unchanging smug demeanor, feeling a little uncomfortable.
However, she was not one to brag when her own love life was a mess⦠Whatever. Quinn could do whatever she liked.
As Zoe watched Quinn leave, Jay suddenly spoke quietly beside her, âLetâs go.â
Zoe turned toward him, and he explained, âIâll take you home.â
âItâs alright. I can get a cab,â she said.
âItâs very late.â
âThere are still cabs available,â Zoe insisted. âI can get one with my phoneâs app-â
âYouâre alone. Itâs not safe.â
âWhatâs not safe about this?â Zoe certainly did not mind-she had been handling things alone herself for years.
However, she had just whipped out her phone and tapped on the app when a long hand snatched it out of her grasp. 1 âJay Parker,â Zoe snapped with an angry edge in her voice, only to find him looking her straight in the eyes.
Her sharp look in turn seemed to fade.
She was quick to adapt to this world, withdrawing from her old character entirely.
âMr. Parker,â she smiled pleasantly. âWe still have rehearsals tomorrow and I donât want to slow you down, so please return my phone so that I can get a cab and head home sooner. I often travel alone at night, and itâs safe since security is good in the city-â
âItâs not safe,â Jay said staunchly nonetheless. âNot with your good looks.â
Zoe was speechless.
Could she interpret that as praise for her beauty? Did he change that quickly in three years?
Even so, she had the nagging feeling that Jay would never admire her beauty, not to mention that everyoneâs definition of beauty differed.
Nor could anyone be forced to acknowledge another.
âCome one. Iâd rather not waste time either, when I still have a rehearsal with our group tomorrow,â Jay said and got into the car without returning her phone.
Zoe took a deep breath-maybe he was just worried that she would slow him down tomorrow.
No longer hesitating, she got in and sat beside Jay, feeling quite awkward.
