Chapter 781
A Life Debt Repaid
Cora said, âMomâs asking everyone to eat at the manor. You didnât answer our calls, so she told me and Bob to swing by while weâre heading over.â
âOh, okay,â Jay replied. âWill Cordy be bringing Dicky?â
âTheyâre at the capital. They wonât make it.â
Jay asked no further questions, and said, âCome on in.â
âOkay,â Cora said, and headed inside with Bob.
âIâll go now,â Zoe said, prepared to put on her shoes and leave right there and then.
âYou can leave after breakfast,â Jay said, stopping her.
âIâll pass.â
âItâs fine-itâs still early, and weâre not going to Levine Manor straight away,â Bob suddenly said.
Zoe glanced at him, and nodded.
Jay pursed his lips, staying impassive. Cora didnât know that Bob used to date Zoe, and didnât care much either since she believed that they were just good friends.
Still, Zoe felt very much on edge, given the complicated relationship between all four of them who were now sitting in the same room.
It was Cora who broke the awkward silence. âWhatâs Zoe doing here?â
âI got drunk while our group was hanging out last night,â Jay answered in Zoeâs stead. âZoe brough me home, but I accidentally vomited on her, and she had no clothes to wear. Her clothes were only dried today.â
âOh.â Cora smiled. âThanks for taking care of my uncle, Zoe.â
âYouâre welcome,â Zoe replied, but could sense the possessiveness just beneath Coraâs seemingly affable exterior.
Cora turned back to Jay. âBy the way, do you know why my mom suddenly asked us home?â
âBeats me.â Jay shook his head. âI wasnât even informed.â
âI heard itâs aboutâ¦â
Cora trailed off, seemingly hesitant.
âWhat is it?â Jay asked.
âShe told me not to say, since sheâs worried you wonât go back if I did.â
Jay frowned right then. âTell me.â
Cora was actually slightly scared of him. Not only was he her elder, but he often called to stop her on the set whenever she messed up while filming with him.
âI think sheâs arranging a marriage for you.â
âCough!â
Jay almost choked on his milk.
âI knew youâd get agitated,â Cora said, and quickly passed him some tissues. âBut in her defense, youâre long past thirty. You have to get married, donât you? Iâm getting married myself, but youâre still a bachelorâ¦â
âI can handle my personal life,â Jay growled.
âMom said she wouldnât have to worry if you did,â Cora went on feebly. âShe said that the woman is from a good family and background as well, and a loyal fan who wonât mind your physical condition-â
âStop it!â Jay snapped, cutting her short.
Cora, however, asked tentatively, âMaybe you prefer men?â
She had been suspecting that for a while.
Jay had been working in showbiz for years, but he never hooked up with any of the ladies even though it was customary for stars to do so for casting couch.
Maybe the issue was in his sexual preferences?
And to be honest, most people involved in showbiz had plenty of issues. Artists were often abnormal, and Cora had steeled her mind for such an outcome.
âWatch your mouth,â Jay cut her off sternly.
Beside him, Zoe was slightly amused. She wondered if Cora was really that naive, or was just faking it.
Jay Parker, gay simply because he didnât mess around with the ladies?
Whatever, it was their family problemâshe was in no place to talk.
âWeâre family, Uncle Jay.â Cora persisted nonetheless. âJust admit it, and Iâll work on Momâ¦â
âCora,â Bob spoke up, stopping her. âYour uncle is straight as an arrow.
Cora remained skeptical. âReally? But over all those yearsâ¦â
âProbably just waiting for the right person,â Bob muttered, obviously staring at Zoe. i Zoe could sense his piercing stare, but didnât respond. After a while, she put down her knife and fork.
âIâm done,â she said, having finally finished her breakfast.
