Chapter 783
A Life Debt Repaid
Bob suddenly asked, âPlease donât tell me youâre rejecting Jay because heâs a cripple.â
âHeâs actually a cripple?â Zoe exclaimed in surprise.
âWhat, you didnât know? You even called him a cripple just now!â Bob was left dumbfounded.
âI thoughtâ¦itâs just a fracture, and itâd heal soon,â Zoe was even more dumbfounded than him.
Bob shot her a look before stopping his car by the curb, which left Zoe perplexed. He had seemingly done it for no reason.
Once he stopped the car, he asked solemnly, âYou really didnât know?â
âWhat?â
âThat Jay was caught in a car crash,â Bob said, still surprised.
Zoe gasped in shock. âWas it serious?â
Bob rolled his eyes. âAre we doing a comedy routine right now?â
Zoe was speechless, but she definitely had no idea-she had kept herself isolated from everything the year she left North City, pregnant.
Bob actually seemed a little disappointed about that. âJay never announced it, but most of the people in the business knewâeither immediately or eventually. How are you going to flourish in showbiz if you didnât know that much?â
âBut no one told me.â
Zoe was at a loss for words.
She wouldnât forget something like that if she was told about it. After all, she was no clairvoyant.
âSo youâre saying you donât mind him being a cripple?â Bob asked, returning to the topic at hand.
âThereâs nothing between us!â Zoe replied. âIâve explained to you back then that I was just trying to break you-itâs not like some spark rekindled. Come to think of it, that doesnât count since he never loved me.â
âHe doesnât love you?â Bob laughed. âDo you think I wouldâve given up so easily if he didnât?â
âNo, he really doesnâtâ¦â
âCanât you wake up already?â Bob asked, glaring at her.
âIâm perfectly awake!â
Annoyed and confused, Bob snapped, âWhat makes you think Jay wasnât into you?â
Zoe retorted in confusion, âThen why do you insist on having me hook up with him?â
âIt frustrates me seeing the two of you like this!â
âThen just ignore us,â Zoe replied flatly. âIâm only focused on showbiz right now. Anything else isnât worth considering.â
âFine, I wonât say a thing. But just one last piece of advice: if you really do have feelings for Jay, tell him right now and stop being so presumptuous. If you donât, pretend I never said a thing.â
âAlright, Iâll pretend you never said a thing.â
Bob rolled his eyes and sighed in defeat.
No other man wouldâve given up being together with the woman he loved, just so she could be someone else.
And to make things worse, his attempt failed miserably.
After sending Zoe home, Bob returned to Jayâs apartment to pick up Jay and Cora.
Jay had always been the quiet type, though Cora was a little chatty.
âWere you close to Zoe?â Cora asked Bob.
âWe grew up together,â Bob replied, glancing at Jay from the rearview mirror while he did.
Jay remained silent.
âOh, I envy her,â Cora said, seemingly offhandedly.
âWhatâs there to envy?â Bob snorted. âWeâve been fighting since we were children.â
âI mean, I like the way Zoe expresses her feelings so bluntly,â Cora explained. âUnlike me, whoâs always so indecisive.â
âTo each their own. Envy is unnecessary.â
âTrue.â Cora smiled. âBy the way, Mom was asking when our wedding would be⦠Should we do it this year, or early next year?â
