Chapter 902
A Life Debt Repaid
Paul growled, âWhat gives you the right-â âHave you forgotten that Grandfather was poisoned, and that his condition was no accident?â Sean replied. âHeâs very likely among us, which was why Grandfather also made it very clear he isnât seeing anyone before we find the culprit.â
Paul was incensed. âWhat, are you suspecting me now?!â
âI would never,â Sean replied reasonably. âBut if you have nothing to worry about, why incur Grandfatherâs wrath? Itâs not too late to see him once the truth is out.â
Paul was still scowling, but after Sean had put it that way, he would be the one who had more to lose if he forced his way inside.
It was obvious Jesse was refusing to see Paul and everyone else because he didnât trust them, and charging inside would only hurt Jesseâs impression of Paul further.
As such, Paul restrained himself and stayed silent.
The rest of the family naturally had even less reason to speak up.
Sean repeated, âGrandfather just made it very clear that everyone should go about their business, and not to visit that often. He will return to Cranston Hall when heâs better.â
âDidnât he say anything else? You were in there for so long!â Patrick demanded, still a little dissatisfied.
âThose matters arenât for your ears.â
âSean!â Paul was furious.
They were simply humiliating themselves by coming here when Jesse clearly trusted Sean more and told him everything, while the rest seemed to be of no concern to him.
âGrandfather has his misgivings, Uncle Paul. Please donât shoot the messenger.â
âSo heâs letting you take over family matters, is he?â Paul huffed, going straight to the point.
âNo. Heâs still healthy enough to manage.â
âReally?!â Paul snorted skeptically, and scoffed, âRight, youâre his eldest grandson and he personally raised you. Itâs only natural that heâs playing favorites. Donât forget me when you do take over!â
âYouâre overstating matters, Uncle Paul,â Sean answered, neutral and nonchalant as ever. âGrandfather is still healthy not to retire, and donât worry-heâd never play favorites.â
âHah! Youâve really inherited the way he speaks without letting on anything. Fine, I wonât waste my breath-if he doesnât want us to bother him, we shall leave.â
And with that, Paul and his family quickly left.
âSean, is Grandfather really alright?â Fred Cranston-Seanâs younger brother -asked just then.
âYes.â Sean nodded. âHe just needs to recuperate for a while, and he will be able to get discharged.â
âIs he too exhausted to see the others? Or maybe he doesnât trust us anymore?â Fred asked.
âGrandfather told me not to say, and Iâd plead the fifth anyway. Heâs fine now, and he did say everyone doesnât have to come by that often. Just head home for now,â Sean urged.
Fred nodded, and stopped asking questions as he left the hospital with his parents.
After they all left, Cordy asked, âWill this do?â
Sean nodded. âThis gambit is a psychological battle, anyway. If the culprit could stay calm until the end, no one would question anything if the culprit takes over.â
Cordy was at a loss of words-so the Cranstons valued ability and cared not for character.
âCome on. Letâs stay inside the ward and wait for the enemy to make a move.â Sean beckoned at Cordy.
Cordy gave Sean a look then, and admitted, âIâ¦I want to see John.â
