Chapter 972
A Life Debt Repaid
Zoe quickly changed the subject. [Still up this late?]
Cordy replied: [Whyâd you text me if you knew itâs late?]
Zoe was suddenly stumped, though Cordy soon sent another reply to answer the question. [Iâm in bed.
Just havenât fallen asleep.]
Zoe exposed Cordy right then. [Because Lucas is marrying Nana Lynd tomorrow.]
[It has nothing to do with them. Iâm chronically insomniac.]
[Really?]
[Yeah.]
Zoe didnât press the issue. [Fair enough. So whatâs the secret?]
Cordy didnât reply, however, and Zoe was left restless-she was always rash, while Cordy was always calm.
Someday, that woman would kill her.
Still, Zoeâs phone started ringing with a call just as she started to draft another text.
Zoe quickly answered. âCordy?â
On the other end, Cordy frowned. âWhat happened to your voice?â
Huh. She forgot that she had lost her voice.
âDo you have a cold?â Cordy pressed.
âNo.â
âThen how did your voice get so hoarse?â
âUhâ¦â
Why Zoe was unsure how to explain, Cordy asked, âWait, donât tell me⦠Jay made you scream that hard, huh?â
Honestly, one wouldnât have the luxury of secrets when they had such a smart friend!
âWell, congratulations.â Cordy seemed to confirm her own hunch before Zoe could speak.
âCan I just mention that Iâm actually hurting?â
âWhat?â
âI meanâ¦â Zoe couldnât help complaining.
They were supposed to be talking about Cordyâs troubles, but it somehow became about her again.
And to make things worse, she had to talk in that cracked voice of hers!
Nonetheless, Cordy was speechless after listening to Zoeâs story, who finished with a question, âAm I being too demanding?â
âNo,â Cordy said quickly. âBut I think you can afford to be more proactive too.â
âHave you tried that before?â
âNever had the chance.â
âMakes sense. Youâve always been single.â
âThatâs what Iâve been trying to tell you, Zoe. Iâm in a relationship now,â Cordy said.
âWhat?!â Zoe cried out in surprise, finally remembering just then that she was going to find out about Cordyâs secret.
However, that secret was a little too much for her, and she asked gingerly,â You said youâre in a relationship? Not with Lucas, is it?â
âNo.â
âPatrick Stuart?â
âYeah.â
Zoe sighed heavily, and Cordy asked, âDo you have something to say about him?â
Zoe couldnât help rambling long-windedly. âNot really, but itâs just a shame⦠Cordy, I really think that Lucas is John. Whatâs going to happen to him if youâre dating Patrick Stuart? He might faint from cryingâ¦â
âI did my best,â Cordy replied. âIt didnât work.â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âItâs never happening between us.â
âCordy-â
âThatâs just it,â Cordy said, cutting Zoe short.
Zoe bit her lip-Cordy had always been ridiculously rational, and would never do anything rash.
âAlright, congratulations,â Zoe said, giving in. It was Cordy after all, and she mustâve thought things through before deciding.
Zoe should be wishing Cordy well instead of harassing the latter over her personal preferences.
âOnce everythingâs settled in the capital, Patrick and I will come back to buy you and Jay dinner,â Cordy said, her tone clearly pleased.
Zoe nodded feebly. âAlright. Iâll be waiting.â
âNow go to bed. Give your voice time to recover and then keep at it.â Zoe blushed, embarrassed.
