âOh⦠Iâm really leaving now!â Shane, feeling utterly defeated, turned to leave,
looking like a wilted flower.
âBut if you continue pursuing me, who knows, I might say yes someday!â
Beatrix teased, a playful smile on her face.
Shane paused midâstep but didnât dare get too excited this time. âSo⦠is
there a chance?â
âNope!â Beatrix shook her head again.
Brutal. Absolutely brutal, Everyone else thought. This was probably the
harshest rejection in history.
Shaneâs breathing grew heavier, anger bubbling up inside him as he turned
around, fuming.

âBut even if I donât agree to be your girlfriend, I might still give you a chance to
try,â Beatrix added, her playful smile never leaving her face.
âIs that a possibility?â Shane, though devoid of hope, turned once more to ask.
âNope!â Beatrix shook her head again.
âArgh! Thatâs it, Iâm done with you!â Shane shouted, completely losing it as he
lunged toward her. He was never one to take rejections hard, but thisâthis
was just cruel.
Luckily, Emmanuel stepped in to hold him back, and Mackenzie also gently
scolded her mischievous sister, reining her in. âThatâs enough, Beatrix. Stop
teasing him.â
âBut itâs fun!â Beatrix laughed. âHeâs leaving soon, and I wonât have the chance
to mess with him again!â
Frederick was at a loss for words. He couldnât help but wonder if he ever
confessed to her, would she toy with him like this too? Just the thought made

Quintus, too, was relieved Mackenzie wasnât as merciless as her sister. Sure,
rejection was painful, but at least Mackenzie wasnât cruel about it.
After the little scene, Emmanuel helped his wife back to their room to rest.
Mackenzie, having just given birth, was understandably exhausted and
quickly fell asleep.
Tia took care of their newborn, allowing Emmanuel to go and check on
Claudette.
âClaudette, heâs here. You two should talk,â Laura said before tactfully leaving
the room as Emmanuel approached.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth had already returned to her studies and left Eastern Star
Mountain earlier.
âHow are you feeling?â Emmanuel asked with a gentle smile, keeping a
respectful distance, since it was late and also that Claudette was dressed in
a light nightgown.

âIâm feeling fine physically,â Claudette nodded gently, and the guarded look

she once had toward Emmanuel was no longer there. Sitting on the bed with
her long hair cascading over her shoulders, she still had a youthful glow
despite being in her thirties.
âThatâs good to hear,â Emmanuel nodded, momentarily unsure of what to say
next. It was Claudette who broke the silence, her soft eyes watching him as
she asked, âAre you busy? I heard youâre leaving Yeringham tomorrow for
Eldoria.â
âYes,â Emmanuel confirmed. âI need to find my sister, and if all goes well, Iâll
head straight to Zovince from there.â
âGood luck!â Claudette smiled, looking at him like a fan admiring her hero.
Emmanuel smiled back, finally speaking, âIâm sorry I havenât been able to help
you recover your memories yet. I havenât had the time to research it or find
anyone who might help. But after I finish these urgent tasks, I promise Iâll do
my best to help you regain them.â

Claudette nodded slowly, lowering her head for a moment before raising it
again. âBut⦠why are you so determined to help me regain my memories?â
Emmanuel froze, surprised by her question.
âHehe, just joking,â Claudette stuck out her tongue playfully. âOf course, itâs
better to regain themâpeople shouldnât live without their past, right?â
Emmanuelâs smile stiffened, unsure how to respond. In truth, he had started
to wonder if helping her regain her memory was even necessary. Claudette
seemed happy and content with her life now, and maybe she didnât need to
remember. Besides, if she didnât regain her memories, it might save
Mackenzie from some emotional conflict.
âThank you, really,â Claudette said, her smile soft and sincere. âAunt Lauraâs
been telling me about youâhow youâre a 5âStar Battle General with many
soldiers under your command. Youâre so important, yet you still find time to
visit me. Iâm really touched.â
